I fleshed a hide today. Dont have a fleshing beam but used a plastic drum. Laid the barrel on its side, put the hide on it and straddled the hide like sitting on a horse. Used my flesher on it. Moved the hide around where ai needed it. Worked great.

LOL, I made a similar sort of frame, just slapped 2x4's together and pounded in nails every 3 inches. But my family hates me tanning stuff, like you I do it in the winter as I have a hair bit more time, but since it would freeze into a brick I bring it inside . . . but like you I am learning as well, I have a few books and read online, but everythign seems to be very sacttered, nothing is definitive step by step which is a real PAIN, lol.

John people like myself (who did not get a deer this year) want to do more then just get the meat. To use the hide is utilizing more of the animal that would have other wise been wasted. l'll be retired in not too many years and will be on a reduced income so everything counts. My family were not hunters so l never learned from them. Wasn't till after l was married that l hunted. l can preserve but want to learn more, make things stretch. What a better way to learn then from you. Your just a dude, l like your presence and you are yourself; not a glorified know-it-all. We all make mistakes and you don't hide from the few (if any) you do make. You have a sense of humor and are humble. l like that. This is why l subbed and will continue to do so. May God bless each and everyone.

did you ever see Ron Nail dry scraping on a beam. Man he made it look easy and quick. I use wood ash and sometimes it works, sometimes not so much and it's a nasty job. Gonna try hydrated lime this time around.

Hey john, I used to dry a few hides back in my younger days. I used salt( to pull moisture and help cure) and 20 mule team borax. I think the borax helped keep the bugs from attacking it. You will definitely need to apply some type of cure to keep from rotting.

I just don't want you to lose the hide with so much work in it. I just preserved them with the hair on. After I got then dried I would work neats foot oil in them to make them pliable. Some of my hides are 20 yrs old with the salt, alum, borax method .

You should point out the bullet hole and do a little bragging on how good of a shot it was. If you want, you could just say that you were saving the meat and shot it in the head. I'll believe it once.
