I am a retired HomeHealth nurse and the mother of the child on a vent without electricity is just heartbreaking. I retired from an agency in a state that has emergency backup plans which include that all patients on vents have backup batteries for the vents and all homes must have backup generators. Wish that all states had mandatory backup plans for all patients requiring electric machines. Sad, just sad. And before anyone starts badmouthing my statements, all patients, especially the children are covered by Medicaid and other health insurance for those patients on vents. My heart goes out to all those caught in this terrible storm and to those families who have lost loved ones.

For those of you that just might be reading this if you’re stuck somewhere in a safe place, count your blessings. I was a flight attendant for many years and I remember one particular storm as we were landing in New York at night. Each time the captain attempted to land and I thought he might instead he would have to rev up the engines, circle & make another attempt. I was scared and yet had faith that our pilots were experienced enough to get us down on the ground safely and we finally did. Some of you may not get home in time for Christmas and be with your families but it’s not worth taking any chances because mother nature has a mind of her own and it’s beyond control of the airlines. So have a merry Christmas and I hope everyone has an even a better new year.🌲🌲🌲 1:08

I'm a mailman in Michigan. Worked the last two days. We drive 40 year old 2 wheel drive LLV trucks with 250k+ miles on them that have offbrand tires and heat that feels like somebody is mouth breathing on you. I throw sand tubes in the back for weight/traction. The trucks that bring almost all of the letters overnight never showed up yesterday so they sent us out to deliver packages only. Being sent out in this weather to play last minute Santa and risking my life for consumerism is absolutely mad, but I felt good for delivering possible Christmas gifts on time.

Thanks, Nick! Though I believe your health overrides Christmas presents being delivered on time. The people can just make a box with in it the name of the item they will get soon. Here's my Canadian poor person with sketchy heat and frequent power outage tips.If your power goes out in sub zero temps and you have no heat and pow and your pipes may freeze.Open all your faucets in the house.Get your family together and get in the biggest bed you have together.Pile on all your blankets or even towels or small rugs.Wear comfy loose sweats and long sleeve shirts and warm socks. This is your nest and you will stay in there bored silly but warm.If you don't have water there is water in your hot water tank and it will stay warm for days.Shut the tank off at the power panel in case the power gets put back on and dry fires and blows your elements. You will need a tube of some kind to stick over the drain of the tank and into a shallow container.Poop in a bucket with a lid and put the toilet paper in another sealed container so you can dispose of later without bunging up your plumbing.Eat stuff you can just gnaw on like crackers or whatever you have without a lot of messing around and getting chilled and taking a long time to get rewarmed.Make it into a game for kids if you can.Good luck and stay safe!

On Wednesday afternoon I was on my way back from delivering freight in Otsego Michigan on US 131 when I saw a sign stating that a blizzard warning was in effect. As soon as it hit, US 131 was pounded and motorists stranded. Before the storm, I drove to South Bend Indiana, got a Hotel room for 5 days, then to Walmart and stocked up on food and water, and kept my butt in that room till this morning. We had no power outages, thank God, and it was just a normal snow storm for us, not too awful bad. Anyway, I was able to keep warm and safe. My prayers to all who were caught in the storm. But when I hear something like this is coming I start preparing immediately and I get where I can be in a safe place if possible.
