Great video, thank you. I agree with Mairiam, it’s opened my eyes to things I hadn’t picked up on 1st time. I kind of regret watching it so quickly but also am grateful of the community who have helped me realise that my second viewing is going to be filled with so much more love, hope and understanding. Am going to watch with my eldest son, who I know will also love it and I can’t wait. Interesting to hear about how Tyler is in the book (should arrive in a day or so), bit nervous about seeing the original version of him.

Thanks for the essay! Three aspects that I've missed: the time loops or the revisting of past events as if they were present is a sign of PTSD and it really feels the same as present. So this aspect of trauma could have found through a sentence in your essey. Especially because the phrase "there is no before" resonates with this feeling: the past is present, there is no before (speaking about deeply traumatic life xperience) Another one is the manipulative nature of the Prophet and the fact that he instrumentalizes children same as Clark the airport people or the numorous examples human society as such. Thrid aspect is the story telling aspect: everyone tells a story to themselves and to others and often cannot exit the own creation in order to see outside of it. You only slighy brush upon it talking about Miranda.

I also found alex intensely annoying. Just complete theater kid energy, which makes sense I suppose. Also, I found the catharsis of Tyler to be a little too easily obtained than it should have been. Even though he states that he didn't order the child suicide bombing, I felt that he still bore some responsibility for it, and he is basically never made to confront that.
@Dontwannaknoow

Yeah that’s something that really bothered me. The fact that two kids blew up one of their close friends and it barely affected the story at all. Or the thing about the gravestones. There is a lot of unanswered questions.

Not just theater kid, but also an adolescent. Impulsive, rash, lacks critical thinking etc. it's just how the adolescents brain is. I didn't like Alex, but I think it's a perfect representation of how some adolescents brain would be in that type of world and culture.

Thanks a lot for feeding my Station Eleven obsession. Just after third watch and found so many more interconnected pieces, some of which you identified there. The book is indeed wonderful and the adaptation is just incredible. So much more to explore 🎭.👏🏾 And I remember hearing about the pandemic lockdown when on a train ride to the dentist. And grappling with the reality of working from home for a then unknown stretch. That time too gave me a great opportunity to read more which I used to do when younger.

okay, first off…i feel quite in awe of your presentation and analysis here! thanks so much for this! more than earned my subscription (with i could subscribe multiple times, ha!…but sent it to a couple of friends with fingers crossed). second, i hadn't realized that both kirtin and tyler played hamlet; amazing…especially considering that, earlier, at pingtree, kirstin is told by the "patriarch" there that she reminds him of tyler. it was also not lost on me that tyler has two other names: David (as in "king david," perhaps?) and "the prophet," (which would situate the previous interpretation nicely with the "children of Israel" thematic throughline). what's most fascinating, though, about the identification between kirstin and tyler is something i see in tyler's very name-as in tyler durden from the movie "fight club" and the {-spoiler alert-} duality of the character contained therein. as such, tyler would function as a sort of trinity (and would thereby be the after of alex, when you look at the register that jeevan signed there at the hardware store when her mother died in childbirth and the fact that tyler probably sent that kid to check on alex's mom…or maybe that the kid was the dad?). really excellent work here, chica! most impressive!!

Do you mean the kid who came to the hardware store for Rose (if I remember her name correctly) and ended up leaving her baby there? It was Tyler himself. He must've traveled with her for a while before she went to stay there for her delivery. It looked like he already started to experiment with his identity back then, cause he used a different name.

i had a really hard time sympathizing with alex. her entire arc hinged on needing to distance herself from the amazing, creative, supportive, affectionate community that raised her. we didn't get to see really any reason for that apart from kirsten being too clingy and hypervigilant, both in response to alex wanting to leave. alex needed more development. plenty of kids move away from home without falling in with a cult after half a day of convincing. this kid handed the cult leader a murder weapon wtf

I think based on the scene where Kirsten loses baby Alex, Kirsten has her on a short leash and is overprotective. Basically a post-apocalyptic helicopter mom and Alex was a rebellious, and naive teen that would be easily be manipulated be a mysterious man calling himself the prophet

Ooof, lot of hate on Alex at the end there :) I like that character a lot. She's just a post-pan kid ready to get the off The Wheel. The Wheel is Station Eleven, she is the Undersea, that's why she was so compelled by the prophet.

Frankly, I hear your criticisms of the show as issues with your attention, tendencies as a viewer, or both. Is the story perfect? It’s begging the question. Are there valid criticisms? Probably. Are there valid criticisms in this video? Eh…probably not.

I loved this show, definitely one of my all time favourites, there was only one thing I didn't like, the prophet used young kids as suicide bombers and it's just forgotten by the next scene, he got his happy ending and absolutely no justice for being disgusting terrorist that had no remorse for manipulating kids and using them as weapons for his own revenge

the show seemed to frame as true his claim that haley, the girl who brought the mines to the airport at the end, had been responsible for the bombing. but i had a really hard time buying it, and he still created this environment where a child convinced two smaller children to wear land mines and hug their grandpa. but he gets to just ride off into the sunset with his mom

I still do not understand this series, nor will I watch it. Is this just post-apocalyptic porn for mostly white women? I just don't find it relatable in any meaningful way. Last of Us had a lot of problems, but at least it was relatable. So only 1% live, and all the actors survive? And their art is relevant? That alone gives me problems.
