Hello everyone. In this video, I would like to compare two Nipponia accommodations, two storehouses of wealthy merchants from the Edo to Meiji periods that still remain in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, known as the Little Kyoto of Iyo.
Ozu, where the clear Hijikawa River flows, has retained its old townscape as it was back then, creating a quaint and nostalgic atmosphere, and Nipponia Hotel operates accommodations mainly in the castle town along the Hijikawa River, including Ozu Castle.
Hotel Nipponia has transformed historical buildings into luxurious accommodations, allowing you to experience unique culture. This time, I stayed in two rooms with different historical backgrounds, including a storehouse of a wealthy merchant from the late Edo period, which is also a registered tangible cultural property.
One is the OKI building, which was renovated while leaving the beams intact, and is the former residence of Murakami Chojiro, a wealthy merchant who made his fortune with a type of wax called "wood wax" in the Edo period. This storehouse in particular was once used as a treasure house to store armor and folding screens. Built in the late Edo period, this building retains the architectural features of the time and Murakami's particular attention to detail throughout, and will be designated a national registered tangible cultural property in August 2023.
The other is a storehouse connected to the tenement house where the craftsmen who supported the culture of Ozu and built the Garyu Sanso stayed, and it was used to make wood wax at the time. The room renovated from the storehouse is a solid, spacious, and open space, and is full of charm, including a fully glassed-in bathroom where you can fully enjoy the charm of the storehouse and a skylight with a view of Mount Fuji in Ozu. The earthen walls of the storehouse are prone to absorbing moisture, so it is difficult to install plumbing on the wall side, and so the bath was placed in the center. It's a bold design. It was truly full of a sense of openness.
We had dinner at Le Un, a French restaurant located at the foot of Ozu Castle. The dishes served on the tableware are Tobe ware, a pride of Iyo.
Located at the foot of Ozu Castle, Oyudono is a lounge and private bath exclusively for guests staying at Ozu Castle, but I was able to take a bath and enjoy a drink while looking up at Ozu Castle. It was the ultimate luxury.
Nipponia's decentralized hotel concept is to consider the entire town as one hotel by distributing breakfast and dinner buildings, as well as the front desk and accommodation buildings, in historical buildings scattered throughout the city. This way, not only one building but the entire town will be revitalized and the old townscape will be continuously preserved. I really liked this concept.
Hotel Nipponia is not just a renovated old house, but you can feel the cultural and historical value of each building with all your senses and reflect on culture and history. If you come to Ozu, why not stay such a historical Japanese style accommodation?
I am a lung transplant surgeon living in Qatar, but I occasionally visit Japan to introduce Japan's beauty and culture, as well as its wonderful tourist spots that we can be proud of foreign tourists. I hope this video will be a travel tip for both domestic and international travelers.
