What I do is take the whole order, mix what I can remember, then comeback and say "Ok, what are we missing here." Also, you can grab a napkin or scratch paper and write 'em down. But I'd recommend trying to remember as many as you can at once. I picture a big chalk board in my head and write 'em down on the that imaginary chalk board. Try different techniques, but don't every worry about it, they know its a big order. Just comeback to them and get the rest of the order over again. Good luck! :)

What I also find to be helpful is to dance a little behind the bar, just to loosen up. I work at a nightclub so it probably a lot different than at a bar, but the customers seem to have a lot more fun when you dance along to the music and sometimes they even start dancing with you.

These videos helped me out so much, it's nearing a year that I've become a bartender and it's the best career move I've ever made, worth all the effort and very satisfying job overall. To those who are still trying to become a bartender, keep working, practice, practice, practice!! I practiced so much on my own, tested myself on house drinks and eventually more, but start with the house drinks, and what's on tap, and if you can know the types of wines you have, that helps a bunch. Borrow bottles and practice your pours, get the drink list, and smile cuz you know you are supplying everyone's party, and that's bad ass!!

Thanks for the input Christine, I'm always open to hearing what you guys want to see. I've alluded to these situations but no, I don't have a formal video about it yet. Basically if someone is rambling and you're busy (happens ALL the time) you can either mix your drinks in front of them, or just simply say "that sounds interesting, I want to hear the rest of this, I'll be right back" and go do your thing. We bartenders are there to socialize yes but its 2nd, making drinks for everyone is 1st :)

I'm a newb and have been searching for some good videos. Some things they just don't teach you in school. You just learn them as you go. Your videos are just what I have been looking for! Other people are just too obnoxious or are only teaching drink recipes. I need to learn more on HOW to "tend the bar". There is more to it than just making drinks. I really like how your videos are organized, your topics are relevant, and you are easy to listen to. Thanks a lot! Keep them coming.

Thanks man. I've recently decided to become a bartender while going to college. Your videos have been a big help. I've only bartended at the Bohemian Grove and they threw me in with no experience. I'm going back in a few weeks and so I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I was thinking about getting a book on all of the basic drinks. I also enjoyed your "The Alcohols" videos. I appreciate your interest in psychology and applying it to working in a bar. You are correct, of course, about smiling - for anyone interested in reading more look up "Facial Feedback Theory", the original experiments attesting to this had participants hold a pencil in their mouth (making a slight artificial smile).

literally caught myself doing this recently and just trying to be in the best mood possible before work since I deal with thousands of people a day bartending on bourbon street. ITS HARDWORK, people can take away your smile pretty quickly. recovery is everything for me. gratitude, thinking of that money $$.. I am the nighttime bartender 4 nights a week at this jazz bar and someone left a review saying I was " borderline unhinged and disturbed " I get 1000's of compliments and smiles but the Nasty people always stick out, trying to focus on the smiles.

Thanks & you're welcome! Don't worry about failing bartending school. I worked at a school for a year and a half & to be brutally honest, schools aren't strict with regimented testing and quizzes..They're a business who want you to pay the fee. Once they have you (your money) they would probably never care, or call, if you never showed up after that. Sad, but true. The tests are created to give a more genuine "school" experience, not to truly test the depth of your knowledge. You'll be fine :)

Yes, sometimes...But I know many bar managers who disagree and look at JUST having a school listed on your resume as definitely a negative. These managers have told me first hand that when they hire someone without experience they have a clean slate to work with. With a school the slate is often neither clean, nor accurate. Not always bad, not always good. In my opinion the reason anyone should attend a school is if they feel it will help them with their confidence & are willing to pay for it.

Great question Abel and I'm going to be addressing this issue in an upcoming video soon, but to answer you here, generally you're not allowed to drink on the job so we bartenders usually have to respectfully decline with a "thanks, wish I could, but I can't." Now the other side of this is that drinking by bartenders happens ALL THE TIME in many establishments. It's always first and foremost not allowed legally, EVER. It's something you have to feelout once you start working. Proceed with caution

Yes is sort of correct, in various states and areas like Wisconsin where you need a certification and they often label the training as getting/requiring "bartending school license", but in the US is not an industry wide prerequisite. However, even if not required, training schools can be good for the purpose of getting practice pouring with real bottles and having people ordering drinks from you. All great practice, if you can afford it.
