Hi Rob. I did the same thing for years. I run a Family building company. Established for 46 years. Took over from my dad and uncle when I was in my late 20s. (Now 46) my confidence was through the roof. Thought I could take on the (construction) world! Lol. It was quite a few years before I realised the big jobs didn't pay for us. Being more suited to smaller jobs. In and out. On to the next. I like to be in control and the personal touch with the customer. I realised that I enjoy it more if I keep it simple and small. There are only 3 of us and also our regular sub contractors who ate realiable and we've used for years. Ego and confidence was a big factor. Not in a horrible way. But I just used to say 'yes' to everything that came along. Now I try and make things easier and simple for myself and my 2 guys that work for me. Now we just jog along and try to enjoy the work. Keep to sensible working hours, no weekends and if we're lucky ' poets' day friday 😁. I still find it goes against my nature. But its not all about the work. Cheers for the videos Rob. Keep up the good work and have a great Christmas break!😊

I’m definitely in the slow lane and indicating to move onto the hard shoulder. I had to reduce my workload quite signicantly about five years ago. It was the best thing I ever did. I’ve never been tempted by commercial contracts, too many hoops to jump through.

Rob. Isn't this what I've said for always? The way I've always looked at it is if I can go to bed with £100 - £150 more than when I got up. It's been a good day. I'm fortunate I can do this without breaking to much of a sweat five days a week . I believe, especially at our ages, we should value our time away from the job equally as much as we value making the money. Plus. Many people see commercial contracts as the holy grail, a status symbol to achieve. But we both know that's not the case.

Back in the day I took on a big job. In the event it was the most gruelling year I had in business, and I lost a lot of money and other customers too. It took me years to get straight. Over 27 years I was stupid enough to fall for this gag three times. It was all ego driven. Some of us never learn.

Great post Rob. Took me my 1st season to realise what I needed to concentrate on which is domestic mowing, never liked general maintenance and never been interested in commercial work. The few commercial jobs I took on didn’t last always found them too pushy and needy. Great advice, figure out what you’re good at and head down that road.

Did take me a few seasons to get it exactly how I like it in terms of work. The thing that was glaringly obvious from the get go was I can earn so much more just domestic mowing which allows me to have a large customer base. Which in turn generates hedge cutting, treatments etc from this customer base.

It's all about making it pay and what type of work you want to do, each to their own. Big commercial sites are not necessarily more profitable it's just different i.e. bigger kit, different standards and practices etc. We all make mistakes, even if some of the KZitem professionals don't like to show it, Kudos to you for sharing your experience!

Im 32 years into Window Cleaning, 6 years in ladderless and Water Fed Pole which is a lot easier on the body of a 54 year old. While mine is mostly domestic i do have a small bit of commercial which pays well and on time. For a while I had a few large care homes on my books which were just very tiring and involves cleaning indoors which I hate, and payment could take ages. In the I got shut of all of them and been replaced by good old fashioned 3 bed semis and the like. The only thing you failed to mention is that with large commercial you get used to the larger paychecks and it can be financially very painful, whereas if you lose the odd house you don't feel it. Great video as ever Rob👍

@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices I use a single axle 6x4 aswell- in tight spots il simply detach it if I can't reverse it in- and even when full of green waste its still manageable to move if needed. Especially on small streets where you have to park on the road and there's only one spot. I can put my trailer a few spaces away
