The monument to William Shakespeare in Stratford upon Avon is perhaps the most famous tribute to a writer in the world. Its enigmas have been in plain sight since it was erected sometime in the early 17th century.
I have discovered number puzzles in those enigmas which follow the same general rules as other clues in the Shakespeare Authorship Game. The letters involved are clearly indicated by their size, their position, or if they are ligatures (two letters joined as one). Very little is left to chance.
The solutions show that the monument is a clever ruse made to look as if it honours a local merchant who became a writer. It was really designed to lead astute viewers to another conclusion: Edward de Vere the 17th Earl of Oxford wrote under the pen name William Shakespeare.
Here I explain step by step the puzzles found in the main inscription and their most likely solutions.
The only codes which are used in them are the simple 23 letter Latin Alphabet gematria values and the Latin Alphabet Repeating Count (LARC) because they were universally known and not secret.
This is part 1 of a multi-part look at the monument.
