I spent two months in Belize when I was 15, in a very large clearing in the rainforest. We slept in bunkbeds in long canvas Army tents. Even though we had a communal gym type shower, many people including me, preferred to lather up in swim shorts, and then jump off a tree limb into a smaller tributary just before the tributary poured into the much larger and much more powerful, Belize River. When I was 19 and I moved away from a 200 person village in upstate New York, to live in a suburb outside the big city of Syracuse I felt so deeply lost inside. But then I remembered and thought about what I had experienced and felt in the jungle and other journeys to other wonderful places, and I suddenly realized the great importance of the joy of simplicity that I had felt in those summer months far from New York. You have such a jubilant light in your eyes at the videos end! There is a joy and peace that comes from discovering the truth that one feels in the jungle life that changes you for the remainder of your life on earth.

Amazing adventure Alice. A person can completely disconnect and take in a different world. I love this video and especially your exiting comments on how we should embrace a simple lifestyle over possessions, and focus on what's important. @harrypike731

Would it be your intent to hike/canoe the entire length of the river, or just specific section of it? Some parts of the river, particularly in Brazil, are incredibly dangerous and basically unmonitored in terms of local police / military presence thus giving way to said areas being dominated primarily by pirates, smugglers, drug cartel boat-runners, and so on. A British expat woman was murdered by Amazon pirates not too long ago, she was canoeing and camping the whole river. They saw her tent erected on the riverbank and decided to just kill her, no specific reason, she didn't even really have anything of value to steal. But unfortunately for such people grown up in harsh environments, life is very cheap. Just something to bear in mind if your plan ever manifest. Take heed of where locals tell you not to go and where is dangerous.

Think I would enjoy visiting Kapawi Lodge. Interesting place. Can't beat natural remedies for ailments. I bet that many of the people who would refuse to eat the bug larvae would drink a diet cola instead...also interesting. I'm willing to eat bugs, but not seeking out the experience. Nature shows I've seen before are interesting and informative, but don't provide much human connection to the environment. Your videos do, which is appreciated.

Amazing video, Alice! I would probably eat roasted ants. Your trip reminds me of a dream I had some years back. My maiden name is Piera. In the dream some young people from South America, who I did not know, were telling me about a drink called Piera, named for a South American moth. When I woke up I googled Piera and found out it is the species name for a South American glass winged butterfly that lives on the forest floor of the Amazon rain forest and eats fermented fruit. Haetera piera is the butterfly! Did you see many butterflies while there? Thanks.
