Just to clarify he did sleep with arnheid. Its just a bit unclear in the anime Ketil is an credibility interesting character. Dont forget he is still a slave owner and Thorfinn/Einar are not the first slaves he's owned. Hes even created a system of buying and using slaves and while its morally better than most, he's still a willing participant to the system. You can of course argue that the slaves would of been worse off with different owners. But he's still not entirely absolved of this This episode showcases it perfectly. Ketil is cursed with the culture he's born into. He himself is inherently a kind and gentle person but the systems in place require him to be cold and ruthless. While he shows remorse, sorrow, and deep regret at what he did. He was still the one who judged the child punishment and executed it. Its a really interesting take on a 'slave owner' character type. I wouldn't necessarily call him a good person at this time of the show, but its undeniable that he is inherently a kind person who doesn't want or desire to make others suffer. But he is deeply flawed nonetheless. Truthfully he is the result of the deeply toxic rooted norse culture of this time period

"Hes even created a system of buying and using slaves and while its morally better than most, he's still a willing participant to the system" There were plenty of people who worked to free slaves in this manner it's really quite altruistic. Think about it like this; Ketil could only go out and buy and free so many slaves before he ran out of money -- but doing things this way he can indefinitely free slaves in as short as 1-3 years a piece, while everyone including him keeps gaining. Someone doing things his way can free more slaves than someone doing it the supposed 'right way'. There's a lot to argue that Thorfinn is a worse person than Ketil is (In summation, perhaps not presently); and yet both men deserve the chance at redemption and to have their better virtues and attempts at goodness regarded.

I mean, I do not fault him for making profit while doing "good", but we see in ep 7 that he indeed does care greatly for people, so I would say making money off of that is a lucky by-product and not th eother way around :)

Freya (Freyja) is a Norse god of... a whole lot of things, but for this context it will be Fertility. Technically though, it should be Freyr (and it may just be mistranslations because they will have translated from Norse, to Japanese, then back to english and the names are fairly similar). Freyr was the god of peace and fertility, rain and sunshine so was very much the "farming" god. Freya is Love Sex Beauty (as well as the aforementioned Fertility, also Gold and Magic i believe) so she is more about human fertility then farming. Jupiter was the god of rain (or well, just weather in general) in terms of Roman gods. Greek god of rain is Zues (who is rain thunder and lightning). Yeah Canute didn't burn the villages. He set of a string of signal fires, serving too purposes. It gave a viseral image of the guys kingdom in flames, whilst also indicating just how far Canute power reached, it showed he had men EVERYWHERE. As for the last scene, they are in bed, she is in bed clothes and his wearing not much at all. I think its more then comforting. Their relationship is that she is his slave.
