James Watt (January 19, 1736 - August 19, 1819) was a Scottish inventor and engineer, developer of the modern steam engine. He played an important role in the formation of the Industrial Revolution.
The steam engine is an external combustion engine that converts the heat energy in the steam into mechanical energy. It can be steam engines, locomotives, steamships, pumps, steam tractors and industrial circuits. A steam engine needs a boiler to boil water to produce steam under pressure. Any heat source can be used, but generally fire from burning wood, coal or petroleum-derived fuels is used.
As a working principle, the water, which receives the heat energy, expands by evaporation and is taken into a chamber, when the chamber is cooled, the vapor that becomes liquid creates a vacuum, so it turns into mechanical energy, that is, work, with the movement of the mechanisms.
In 1884, British engineer Charles Algernon Parsons (1854-1931) built the first successful steam turbine. This facilitated the construction of high-speed ships. Generators are also easier to use.
Efficiency of steam engine
Despite James Watt's development, the efficiency of steam engines was still around 7%, the remaining 93% being lost as wasted heat.
The first person to examine the efficiency of the steam engine was the French physicist Nicolas Leonard Sadi Carnot (1796-1832), in his book On the Driven Force of Fire published in 1824, he showed that the maximum efficiency of the steam engine depends on the difference between the temperature of steam in its hottest state and water in its coldest state. Carnot is considered to be the founder of the science of thermodynamics, as he was the first person to consider the way that heat and work are converted into each other.
After the first steam engines were used on ships, in 1804 Richard Trevithick produced the world's first steam locomotive by placing a fixed steam engine on the chassis of a wagon. He organized a demonstration by moving his locomotive on his private road, but he could not make a commercial profit from it.
