I have to disagree about the battery life. I think it's on par or better than my Switch OLED so long as I'm not running Cyberpunk or Evil West on med/high. It's a bit unreasonable to expect to get 4-6 hours of battery life while continuously running titles like that. If the deck was running out of juice after just a two hour session on Emudeck, that would be something to be upset about.

That would have been one of the first things i fixed if i was valve. The whole time i thought i was too dumb to find the off-button for the screen. The second problem that really bothers me: You can have controller profiles to play the game but you cant have performance profiles for a great battery life? Imagine you can download someone elses performance-settings and dont have to tinker yourself. Other than that so far: thank you valve. You've done well so far.

Battery life is one thing I think that's overblown. Everyone compares it to the Switch, but if you were able to play the latest AAA games with high settings on Switch the battery would certainly die very fast, but the Switch can't even play those games. Playing newer high end games on the go even for only a couple hours is impressive. Plus battery banks are very affordable and can easily double or triple the battery life. So people make a bigger deal out of the battery than it needs to be.

Honestly my biggest concern with the future of the steam deck is the offline mode. Valve cannot fix it, some companies like ubisoft make their games with online connection as a requirement using uplay or stuff like denuvo.... like persona 4 Golden the PS vita version doesn't have it and probably the nintendo switch won't have it too and is extremely annoying, I don't have a steam deck but is ridiculous that the P4G version of the game is verified on the steam deck but is not playable offline...., I think the only way valve can incentivize studios to do it is to give bonuses to the revenue split of the games over 70% , for example if a single player/ coop game has a verified status AND has not an online connection as a requirement to access it they give an extra 5% of revenue for them, and if is a multiplayer online game with anti-cheat the game must have official support to get that 5% revenue split, I know valve won't do it but honestly I think is a brilliant idea, give incentive to the studios to make games verified on the steam deck with a great offline experience in exchange of a 5% extra money per game sold.
@namegoeshere197
2 жыл бұрын
Big company's already do get a discount on steam. For all sales between $10 million and $50 million, the split goes to 25 percent. And for every sale after the initial $50 million, Steam will take just a 20 percent cut. If the offline market gets big enough and the company's smell revenue when im sure we will see a return to offline mode. But i doubt its gonna happened.
@destebangm11216
2 жыл бұрын
@@namegoeshere197 yeah but that only happens for big AAA titles , AA and indies usually never get to those numbers and if its an extra 5% for everyone AAA would get 85% beyond 50M with those requirements, but I really doubt that would ever happen specially coming from valve, the only way that could change could be if the steam deck becomes a product that appeals to mass audiences and people started to realize that some games cannot be played on the system in offline mode unlike the nintendo switch, were some games that have denuvo on pc doesn't have it there (yet). But that would also take a lot of time and a lot of people in order to change from backlash from users. It sucks it probably won't change

For anyone having the download issue when it's off. Don't shut it off with the button or put it to sleep. It will time out by itself after a while and the screen will shut off and the Deck will continue to download. What I find most annoying, especially when I first got the Deck, is that you can't just queue up 50 games easily. It takes a while to allocate space and starts downloading immediately. You can eventually queue more games but it has to stop the previous game download first. Not sure why it doesn't just add them to the queue after the game you are downloading.

"They have a tool that allows you too see how game performance changes as you adjust graphical settings." ....so basically what every PC has done since the 90s? You're looking at the steam deck as if it is a console when you should be looking at it as a mobile PC because that is EXACTLY what a steam deck is. Even PS5 and XBOX series are made mostly of PC parts these days. They are just putting custom software on them that is restricting how much you can do with them.. If someone was able to crack open a PS5 or Xbox Series FULLY so that we could install windows and have the benefit of great drivers that actually worked well for their hardware.... well lets just say it would be freaking MAGIC. Suddenly you would have a gaming PC that was more portable, had a low price, was able to run ANYTHING that a PC can (meaning you aren't as limited as you are on a console). You could run emulation, software and programs that weren't games. You would have endless possibilities. Sometimes we have been able to get android or windows running on consoles through exploits but because they can't fully utilize the hardware and everything has to be done through work arounds you lose a HUGE portion (sometimes more than half) of the performance. What steam and these Chinese companies are doing right now is revolutionary. It will change gaming forever and in a great way. It's just a shame it had to happen right during all the shortages and such. Had we been able to do this prior to the coof we would see much wider availability and pricing. But in time I think we will see these devices DESTROY console gaming as we know it. Xbox and PS will have to adapt and FAST. Steam is essentially making PC gaming available to the enthusiast tier of gamers who just want to be able to plug and play without building a rig and installing drivers etc.. The industry has needed this for a long time. PC gaming has by far been the best way. It was just not as convenient or affordable. I can't wait to see what the future holds. I don't think VR is the future. I think mobile PC gaming is the future. Soon our phones will have enough power to be running this crap. That's when things will get REAL interesting.

The messing with the settings ability I see more as a pro then a con. The games I have tested have generally run pretty good without any need to mess with any settings. But it is there for those that wish to. And I have changed a few things in some games to more fit my style. I honestly have played new consoles that feel more like a chore to get a game running than the deck. Not by a lot, but still. It is not always that smooth on the console side, either. On do need to check that the game is certified for steam, however. And this I guess could fool a lot of console players. Even if I think that steam do present the game that work good on the deck pretty well.

As a Steam Deck owner, I'll add the pro of it being a computer. It runs "Linux", and as a result you can install software that runs in "Linux". It's very easy to install 'Google Chrome' in "desktop mode" and then when you go back to "gaming mode" it will be available to launch as if it was a game. It works as well as Chrome does on any "Linux" computer. I use it to view Twitch streams, KZitem videos and other things. @@LateCloser I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

@@LateCloser The operating system is called SteamOS. If you're dead-set on being pedantic enough to have to _always_ acknowledge the fact that calling it linux is not entirely correct, then you can just call it SteamOS. The biggest issues I have with launchers such as Steam, EGS, GOG etc is the occasional prompt of having an internet connect to access my games. I live on an Island. We don't have the best internet. I managed to import a steam deck and I dual booted it and had everything configured to my tastes on both windows and the Linux end. So I go and run a single player game and a no internet connection prompt hit me. I wasted no time and uninstall all my single player games and downloaded repacked versions of all my purchased games, freeing me of both launchers and extra disk space as repacked games have the options to not install extra files such as language packs and other non essential bonuses. I missed the old days when you brought a game cd and all that was on it was the game which you could install straight to a folder of your choosing. The biggest selling point for the steam deck isn't so much that Steam has a big library of games to choose from, it's the games you already own! I have over 380 games in my library, but rarely get to play these days because I have a job and a kid. Turning on a gaming pc during rare 30 minutes of free time is often not worth it, but picking up your steam deck for a quick session seems like a game changer. Some reviews (The Verge: "It's not ready yet") complain that it's sometimes difficult to get stuff running, but honestly if you're not a brain-dead journalist and aren't afraid to get into tinkering, you can probably get almost any game running on the Steam Deck. I bought a Nintendo Switch a few years ago, and while it's a nice little system, the biggest problem is the weak hardware and the initial lack of good games. While it now has a neat selection of games to choose from, you STILL have the problem that Nintendo games are freaking expensive. Even games that came out years ago still cost 60 bucks in the eShop. While the deck might seem expensive, it really isn't when you consider it's a fully-fledged gaming pc for your pocket :) Power to the players!

It is clear for me that this is just the first attempt of Valve with something like this, and it is already a GREAT first step. The next iteration is gonna have at least: - more I/O all around; - frontal camera, so you can seamless use for video chat, read QR code for joining Wi-fi, etc (even the Vita had that); - better accessibility for changing the SSD; - official accessory for battery expansion and/or docking with PC; - all the software improvements mentioned. But I also think the Steam Deck will be like the Pixel/Nexus phone: just the first-party 'ideal' device with that system. The true revolution will come with all 'consoles' from other companies made with the Steam OS in mind, specially more modest and cheaper ones. For sure Valve will disclose how much the game sales increased after the Deck release, and they will want more of that.

100% agree its fantastic, I use mine daily.... my ONE wish, is they improve the magnifying tool. small text in games is #1 issue for me (by far), and the tool works 'ok' (and is a great idea!) , but it sometimes interacts with game controls, so you can't properly move the magnified area... also Id like it a bit easier to access (shortcut)

Totally agree! One thing I've been doing is remapping the left trackpad to the magnifier tool in Steam Input. Then I turn on FSR so it kicks in whenever the tool is active. Has worked pretty well for me so far.

tbf that's more devs making text way too small than anything else. Hell Switch ports have the same problem, even *native* Switch games, all the text in BotW is hilariously small on a Switch Lite.

I guess the biggest complaints about portability/battery life/noise etc is that some end users don't understand that Valve created a device in which YOU are in charge of your experience. I mean, I can easily quite easily get 3 hours of battery life in Cyberpunk 2077 while others have 1.5hours, but the experience is almost the same... the fans aren't particularly louder than the Switch when playing a highly demanding game. Sure, the device is quite hefty, but it isn't really the device size itself that make the device hard to fit in your backpack. It's actually the tank-like case. I am still awaiting for a company to build a slim case. Because you can basically cut the volume of that case by half.

Other pros: Price/performance, custom Linux/UI, frequent updates, sleep/resume, audio quality, can install other OSes. Other cons: Poor virtual keyboard (unresponsive, missing keys, no UK layout), weak Desktop Mode (out-of-date kernel/packages, poor internationalisation, bare minimum apps installed [e.g. no media player]), having to go to Desktop Mode for some actions (e.g. adding a non-Steam game, setting a static IP for your wi-fi).

Have to say I long for a Steam Deck, I've got over 300 games and it looks like the perfect system for my indies, those smaller games of simpler gameplay I can always amuse myself with. The other day I downloaded every game I own that's under 1 GB, so many titles I haven't even played yet.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and review on Steam Deck. So, first thing that people always get confused is that Steam Deck is not a consol. This is a Linux based computer with a form-factor hand held gaming device. You can hook it to a monitor, keyboard and mouse and use it for work. Steam Input is another world. Steam Deck is aimed for people who are thirsty in custom setup. Thanks to Valve, you can go crazy with Steam Input. I play Guild Wars 2 (PvE) on my Steam Deck and it took me a couple of hours to setup all input I wanted to. Steam Controller also have that issue. People think that Steam Controller is a gamepad, which is not. This is a Valve's attempt to replace mouse and keyboard. Steam Controller is one of a kind device.

Hi Bill, first time checking your channel. Proton DB is a great tool, BUT I thinlk that the Game developers that are creating new games on Steam have to ADD the Steam version of their game instead of just releasing it for just for windows. Modern game engines can do that, even for Macs. Holo ISO is community project that can be donwloaded and loaded into a regular Desktop Computer to run Steam OS 3. That being said, game developers can do that to test their games. Indies or big studios shouldn't avoid the Steam/Linux version. Doing a Steam version can reduce the issues of making titles available for the Steam Deck and having most of the titles in Unknown/unplayable state. If they plan to release a game under steam, at least they should do a Steam version. I think that should be fair for us gamers. What do you think?

I got mine a month ago and been loving it so far, there are a bunch of gripes, it's not perfect but it's god dang cool as hell. I feel like the claims about issues with the fan and battery are made by people who've never used the Steam Deck. I think I got the good fan type (though honestly no idea) but I never really thought of the fan as an issue. It's not super loud, my shitty work laptop sounds like it's getting ready for a take off on heavy loads while the Steam Deck just kinda makes some noise that you ignore. When playing it's not an issue for the user, if you are using headphones then I don't see it being an issue for anyone around either unless you're sitting in deafening silence and your fan starts to ramp up - I guess then you ruin the zen but in any real scenario it's a non issue. The battery life while it could be better it feels fine. I don't see myself in a scenario where I use the Deck and not have an access to an outlet; the only scenario this is possible is when traveling by car - these lighter chargers just won't cut it but in those cases you have people to talk to and music so, eh. But generally, trains, planes, hotels all have outlets, this is not the type of device you whip out of your pocket for 5 minutes, you kind of need to take a knee to play it and that usually happens around power outlets. But past that argument, playing AAA games on this is sort of... weird for me. It's GREAT that you can do it, some even work at 60fps, but they run your battery down if you want high fps and they just would be a better experience on a PC. Playing AAA games from a fer years ago hits the spot, atm the most demanding game I am running on a Steam Deck would be GTA IV probably and that gets 2-3 hours of battery life on high settings so I'd say it passes the test. The portability is sort of an issue though, you'd expect more portability from a device like that but like you said, it's about as portable as a laptop but it's lighter and comfier in every way. I agree that this is a way better form factor than a laptop. I've always wanted a laptop for a portability but looking at what I would use it for the Steam Deck just fits me better - it's gaming device 1st, laptop 2nd, I can put it out on a train and play without any issues whereas on a laptop it's pain to get settled with a laptop, the flat keyboards are trash for gaming, trackpad is not exactly a solution for everything - joystick+trackpad works a lot better - you can hop into bed and be comfy with it. The best way to comment on its portability is to say that for a handheld device it's bulkier than you'd want it to be but it's a really handy and comfortable form factor nonetheless. And also unsupported games tend to run on Steam Deck if you can get some Linux know-how person to help you out, with the exception of anti cheat software issues pretty much everything can be run if you just know how. It's a great pain, don't get me wrong, but if you have that one game you just MUST have on your steam deck, and the issue is not the anti cheat, then you have like 90% chance that it is possible to run it.

Got mine like 2 weeks ago, primarily played console on the TV before. I love it cause of how quickly you can get in and out of a gaming session. I rarely find myself wanting to hog our TV and play games on it for hours on end. But every now and then I wanna do a 30-60 minute session and sometimes maybe I got 4 separate 25 minute slots - for this, the steam deck so far has been amazing. Thanks to the sleep feature you can get in and out of a game in like 15 seconds, maybe even less. Im not blocking the TV for my girlfriend and I dont get annoyed at the startup time of booting up a console and launching a game (or having to go sit at my computer desk for 20 minutes of gaming). The fact that game saves do transfer in the cloud is cool to, in case you got a game you occasionaly wanna play on a bigger screen with mouse and keyboard. So far Im super happy with my buy. The library is also great, there are so many indie titles that might never make it to the console that I would never sit down to play on the PC

With what I’ve seen in similar devices like the Nintendo Switch and even some tablets, This is the type of device I’d use when I’m just hanging on the couch or maybe in a hotel just killing time and I know there’s an outlet near by, the battery life is too short and it’s too chunky to lug around .

The last point I don't get. It's not a con of the Steam Deck to give you the tools to change the graphics settings from a user perspective of someone who doesn't want to fiddle around. In my opinion it's a con of the game. If I'd pick up a game for the PS5 where I could do that I wouldn't blame it on the PS5, but on the game. Speaking from a perspective of a user who wouldn't want that.

Fantastic video! I truly enjoy my Steam Deck. I installed EmuDeck almost immediately, and now I have access to thousands of retro games in the palm of my hands. This thing does PlayStation 2 perfectly, and PS2 is like one of my favorite consoles of ALL TIME!! It's kind of wild to me how this thing can easily play awesome games like Stray, Spider-Man, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto V, and Doom Eternal, then also play retro games like Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Turbo Grafx 16, and then jump back into current games with XBOX Game Pass to play some Halo Infinite, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, and Forza Horizon 5 (and the analog triggers are superb on this). I own a lot of devices, but after getting the Steam Deck, I have zero interest in whatever these Chinese companies like Ayn or Aya or whatever, come out with. This is the must-have gadget of 2022.

AND it has a fully tweakable gyro - the one thing thats irritating Elite Series lack. but gyro honestly tertiary - like i had NO idea how bad i needed sticks w multiple individually customisable capacitive touch zones & outer ring input commands! oh and btw perhaps more importantly most of my library plays flawlessly on it

I really hope the steam deck has a successful retail launch at some point and becomes a lot more mainstream so Valve can put pressure on developers with things like always online DRM resulting in their games being listed as unsupported/playable only and not verified. EDIT: With the dock delays, I'm also kinda hoping another reason they are delaying is because they will release a controller with it as well as it's kinda required when docking.

It seems to me like Valve should be able to fix the offline mode issue to some degree. There must be some sort of handshake that occurs when you first launch a game, verifying it as a legitimate copy. They just need to somehow shift that handshake to the end of the install process.
