I've been holding out for the last year and a half for the possibility of a steam controller 2. I have a picture I found online that I hope it would look like. It was basically just a more scrunched version of the deck with all the same features. I really like the idea of dual stage triggers and maybe adding more features than the deck currently has.

As a heavy steam input user, with the steam controller and with random controllers (and the deck) I actually do use all the inputs on the deck controller, all 4 back buttons, gyro, both trackpads (although i still want the ability to toggle the gyro through a virtual menu...) and both the touch inputs on the sticks, action layers, virtual menus, trackpad as mouse, etc. For some of the games i play (warframe being the best example) i have a heavily customized controller layout that is only compatible with proton 7 when playing warframe (as the developers messed up steam input heavily on newer proton versions) where i have different layers for ship controls, player control, interface/menu controls. I even found a good use for the touch detection on the left stick (i actually use it to activate the railjack ship control action layer when i do those missions) But warframe is one of the super few games (that is not an RTS) where you can make use of everything that steam input has to offer and all of the deck controls.

My dream for the Steam Controller 2 is basically just the Steam deck, but without a screen (the overall form-factor remains the same). Same button layout and everything. Specifically, I want this because of how ergonomic having that extra width is. And honestly, if it's not that, I probably won't buy it. I already have a nice controller, and so there'd be no reason for me to spend money on something I wouldn't get much value out of.

Okay, If I may be a nerd about it: In some emulators, it is just easier to pair four different controllers for multiplayer than it is to have multiple that are the same model (like DS3 or DS4 or X360), and steam input API (SIAPI) is not actually 100% perfect at clarifying this for Steam Overlay. I really liked the Steam Controller, but loved the Steam Deck more, and somehow the biggest drawback but greatest potential W for Steam, is that Steam was a one-man band of creating and curating this. Opening it up to even more devs, or somehow uniformly reviewing user submitted control configs will cause the Deck Verified number to skyrocket (I imagine the biggest issues are that some games aren't controller friendly but COULD BECOME that way) I am saying, it was a monumental Herculean effort to "make them play nice", and the harvest of all that hard work was not in Steam Controller's first life; but its second life will be the fulfillment of our hopes. First comes as a lamb, next comes as a LION BABY!

I used to play Star Trek online on Playstation, it's a really cool game and I probably had thousands of hours on it on Playstation. But I switched to PC thanks to the Steam Deck and I had to play STO again, and at first I was a bit disappointed because I didn't really like using a M&K, I'm also a noob with PC stuff, but once I got the hang of the Steam thing to map keys to controller buttons, I now find the Deck the best place to play STO. Steam is so cool that I use Chimera OS while I wait for Steam OS to get released for regular desktop PC's, and I made two controller settings for the Deck and a DS4 for when I play on my main PC, and since the DS4 doesn't have the back buttons, I didn't use them on the Deck, so I have so many combinations for the DS4 to access all the skills, pretty much 40 skills in space, plus many other commands, and since the DS4 has a track pad I also have a mouse for a few instances outside of combat. The coolest thing is that whenever I switch between the Deck and my desktop PC, I have the same controls scheme, and if you play STO you'll see it's a lot going on to not have to use a mouse and keyboard. I made my controller scheme available to the community, but it seems some input gets missing, I don't know if it's something I have to do first before uploading it or something, but when I setup the game for my sister, I noticed some inputs were different or absent between DS4 controllers (the DS4 my sister use is the colored one), anyway I'll try to update the control scheme again, because the game plays a whole lot different and snappy when all you need to do is press buttons on a controller instead of having to look at the skill tray to activate them with mouse clicks, all while having the most fluid control for your starship, or character if on the ground. By the way, Star Trek online (STO for some) is a free to play, completely free if you want to, so I'd recommend it for anyone who likes Star Trek related stuff, it's free so people most definitely should at least check it out. Space combat was always my favorite, and I confess I didn't really liked the ground combat though, up until now playing on Steam using the Steam input thing, now I find myself messing around in ground combat just as much as the space combat...The funny thing is that controller support is a official thing for consoles, but it works better on Steam for PC lol Steam is just awesome, I regret wasting money on subscription scams for so long, while something like Steam existed, and being afraid of PC gaming was silly, but Steam makes it a whole lot easier though

Steam Controller was, for me, the best controller I've ever had! The customisable reassigning of every button along with having trackpads and gyro allowed for redefining controls any way I wanted so that playing any game, for example, Witcher 3, was always better on SC than mouse + keyboard. I personally never needed a second analog stick or a physical D-Pad. The only problem, SC looked and felt cheap - SC2 should be more premium but it must not be more expensive than other controllers.
@krzysztofmaliszewski2589

@baysidejr's reply was removed? I agree, that SC2 with just 1 trackpad would be too close to the PS4/5 controller and that not having 2 sticks was why SC didn't stay. Valve will have a problem adding more stuff so everyone is happy while leaving the price at an acceptable level - a hard nut to crack. Most likely, they will go for gyro + 2 trackpads and have 2 sticks keeping the D-pad off as in SC1 to save space and cost.

For me, I cannot live without a d-pad. The trackpads are nice for various things, and the ability to assign functions to it is amazing. Dual sticks and face buttons are obviously a must. I haven't really felt decent shoulder buttons, but I believe the Dualsense controllers have been the most comfortable imo. Triggers should act just like the Gamecube controllers did, though feel more comfortable. Back buttons are nice, and I'm still torn between having them operate by gripping the controller or pushing against the back of it like how the Steam Deck works. Rumble is optional, but Gyro is nice for aiming.

My dream SC2 would be not that different from the original one and I'm gonna break the rule you set about the sticks. Trackpads are way better overall and are more durable than thumbsticks (even if you have Hall Effect, the rubber on it still wears down). You could have the middle ground by making it modular (Valve has patent for modular controller) so you could swap trackpads for stick/buttons/whatever. Take the Steam Controller 1, swap thumbstick for dpad, add 2 more back paddles and have 2 gyros inside. I'd also like better bumpers (I already broke 2 right bumpers and I had to 3d print the part) that are more in line with the triggers, similarly to Dualsense, SC's bumpers stick out too much for my taste. The next thing is the polling rate/input latency - at 500hz/2ms is the must have preferably 1000hz/1ms. The last thing is haptics just like in Steam Deck. You asked about usage of back buttons, I'll tell you about my whole layout in shooter games for my modded Dualsense (4 back buttons mod). I shoot and ADS with right and left bumper, simply because triggers have travel distance, so I use them for interacting and reloading. Face buttons are for swapping weapons/using consumables (if there are too much of them I set separate binds to long and double press), that way I don't have to take the thumb from the right stick which is set as flick stick. I jump with R4 (let's call them like they are in Steam Deck for simplicity), dodge/sprint with L4 (if they are separate actions I set the second one to L5). The rest of back buttons are other important actions like pinging or using skill. Trackpad is used for touch menus or if I don't need them for start/select with some additional actions on long and double press. Took me a lot of tinkering until I came up with the config, but now I can play any shooter, almost as good as I'd play kbm (aiming needs more training tho)

I don't use all 4 back buttons all the time but some games like grim dawn it really helps having extra buttons, wrc 7 I use them for shifting and now I can actually use the right stick to move the camera while driving. My perfect Steam Controller 2 would be a similar design to the original. I'd want the build quality to be more premium, I want the tech that's in the Steam Deck trackpads (lower latency and pressure sensitivity), but with the form factor of the original. A higher polling rate gyro would also be great. I'd also want the face buttons to be a little bigger and to not be domed. I would also love it if the bumpers could be a scrollwheel, or a capacitive strip with haptic feedback. 4 back paddles would also be great. Something more in line with the Xbox Elite Series 2. I don't like the back buttons on the Steam Deck, they're too hard to press. I think making a Steam Controller 2 in the same design as the the Deck would be a mistake, it wouldn't be all too different from a Dualsense at that point. Having the touchpads be large, circular, and in the primary position is what I want. I think the deck trackpads are great for a handheld, but not something I'd want for a standalone controller.

Honestly if they mashed the two ends of the Steam Deck together and made a controller out of that I'd be perfectly happy. They already have build quality improved and the real secret sauce of the whole thing is Steam Input. I could probably get by with one trackpad even. Either way, would instabuy a new controller and I went ahead and bumped the OG controller to the top of my wishlist in solidarity. Maybe if Valve made a really big design and engineering push to see if they could get a controller to be RTS-usable, they'd have really solved the PC-couch problem. That's the hardest use case for a controller. RTS's are so M&K dependent.

Two sticks, d-pad, 1 trackpad and at least 2 buttons in the back... although I wouldn't mind if there were 4 buttons in the back. I already have something similar by using a PS4 controller. It has the track towards the top center of the controller, two sticks, and d-pad. I have those cheap two button clips for the controller that are just shortcuts for L3/R3 buttons. I hate pushing L3/R3 buttons. I feel as if I'm wearing the controller down quicker that way, so that clip-on works great. If Steam comes out with Steam Controller 2, It'll be a day one purchase if it follows similar to the above or the Steam Deck controller scheme. (oh, I just bought the Steam Controller 1 from a co-worker the other day... so I have slowly started playing around with it on the Steam Deck after I got its firmware updated for bluetooth).

I love Steam Controller so much I have myself two LOL. Really hope they bring all the great thing to the second one the Orginial SC have the best ergonomics in my opinion and the decks sticks are by far my favorite, albeit not the best in terms of technology used. However, I like the circular touchpad waymore than the square one used on the deck, and actually cross mark on the leftpad is so useful I hope they can do something similar to the new controller. I personally is a customizer, I love tinkering and utilizing all the key and pad and everything to find the best fit for me and the game. One thing I would really love to see is Valve to do something on the bumper. It might be a bit controversial that I think Valve have done so great implementing touchpad to "replace" right stick and I hope them do some innovation to the bumper as well. I mean, index and middle finger are the most agile, I hope we can explore the utility of the bumper to actually utilize the missing chance, maybe a touch sensor like on the sticks or maybe allow them to be analog as well, or even make it like a seesaw that can rock back and forth for two buttom.

I use everything steam deck controller wise. It's to the point I just can't go back to SC1. Right TP is dedicated mouse and it would make most the games I play impossible to play if removed. Left TP is great for the reasons you mention, and so much more like a minimap mouse area on an rts. I just wish I had directional inlays on both trackpads. I don't use abxy, just all 4 back buttons. It's so much faster and my fingers are already there. Abxy turns into mode switching and dedicated menu buttons. For a keyboard first player It's and easier adjustment than a normal controller. Gyro of course, just give us even more options.

I dont have a steam deck, but I do own the steam controller. For me, I need that right trackpad and 2 gyros. I have bad RSI/carpel tunnel but its not bad enough for me to get surgery on it, but it flares up after 30 mins of using a computer. So when I play video games I use gyro for aiming when I play FPS games, and I do racheting, so the right pad is just for me to hold when I want gyros active and I lift off when I need to recentre myself. Also when my RSI has flared up and I still need to use the computer, I use the steam controller as my keyboard and mouse. But I think if valve made a steam controller 2, they would probably mirror the steamdeck's controls and most likely market it as primarily a controller for docked mode. But for me what features would I want on a steam controller 2? same as the ones on the steam controller, but better quality, 2 gyros, 4 paddles instead of 2 and maybe slightly smaller trackpads, I find myself not being able to use the full range of the trackpads because for me they're about 10% too big.

Perfect Steam Controller 2: * 2 sticks (variable length) * 4 configurable back buttons * Trackpad (at least 1) * The most presize gyro known to humanity * A d-pad that's presize and hasn't got too much travel * Clicky buttons

Steam controller 2, Id get one if it was compatible with not only my PC and deck but also my android tv box and xbox one, multi system support is important to me.

I use all 4 back buttons on my steam deck for Doom Eternal , I hate using the weapon wheel so I want as many assignable hotkeys for different weapon swaps. The 4 back buttons is one of the few places you can say without a fact the steam deck is superior to the other portable handhelds, it just has more control features with 4 back buttons and 2 track pads.

Perfect controller would just be the 2 controller half's of the deck stuck together, then i would be happy

Feel like there's a gap in the market for PC game preservation in the form of USB flash drives or SD cards. I asked Coury from MY Life in Gaming, and he has started using a similar system. I'd love to see a company design boxes and cards for saving and preserving your data. Just moved to pc, and feeling quite short changed after paying £50 for a digital version Cyber Punk 2077, but after a quick search online found an empty dl code dvd box and promptly downloaded and stored it inside! Chuffed.. But there must be others in the same boat as me. With the way Xbox and PS5 are going all digital, collectors are going to be a thing of the past. Let me collect! Any thoughts on this?

I think my perfect Steam Controller 2 would be the two controllers on the SteamDeck in an ergonomic configuration. I'd definitely want to retain the back paddles and at least one thumb reachable track pad. I've used both PS5 and Xbox controllers, and I've gotten quite comfortable with the PS5 one. I doubt it would take long to get used to a more Xbox like one if they went that direction, though.

For me, I want Valve keep it about the same as the steam deck lay out and buttons so they're not working on 2 controller option like for steam deck and a new steam controller be less work but we get what we want. And another reason, what ever new things comes to the steam controller 2 ends up in the steam deck, and what ever controller update on the steam deck ends up on the controller.

Steam controller 2 2 track pads 2 analog stick D-pad Classic face buttons At least 2 or 4 back button placed in comfortable position And descent vibration motors besides haptics on track pad or just stronger haptics on whole controller (don't know about you but for me vibrations on the steam deck are a bit lacking) trigger vibration motors like on Xbox one/series controllers also might be good but not necessary Gyro Button with 3 dots like on steam deck And capacitive buttons and stick

However they build it I’ll buy it, but my 1 request is the haptics need to be on par with the dual sense or switch pro controller. The LCD and OLED Decks haptics still aren’t that great in comparison and maybe because they had to be since it’s a console too. But a steam controller 2? Haptics/HD rumble, whatever it’s called. Essential for me, idk how people play without vibrations lol when my Xbox controllers about to die and it kills the vibrations I feel something’s off. Also also, day 1 I’d buy a TV console/steam machine 2, with the success of the Deck I know valve could put out an affordable optimized TV console. Make it optimal with their VR and bundle it with the Steam controller 2

My perfect steam controller would just be the steam Deck, horizontal stick button layout and all, tbh.

I'm the opposite. I only use the right track pad for more precise aiming. Especially for older games without native controller support. Mapping mouse movements to joystick isn't great, something definitely gets lost in translation no matter how you tune the sensitivity. Same for the 4 back buttons. Some old games really benefit from the extra buttons. FEAR being a good example.

You know, I haven't used the back buttons as much as I thought I would. I'm the type of person who binds stuff to my thumb buttons on my mouse (almost always at least melee attacks for shooters), so I thought I would. I do end up using the right track pad as a dpad sometimes though

13:07 The perfect Steam controller doesn't have to do much that the Steam Deck already does Back buttons track pads. Just make it fit the had and get rid of buttons. Don't need all of the buttons (unless I'm playing BattleBit Remastered)

If there was a new Steam Controller, it should have all inputs on Deck. The reason? To allow for 1:1 Steam Input configurations for games to carry over when switching between Deck and docked play.

Also If FF16 can't run on the Deck there is also Horizon Forbidden West which is another title coming out for PC. My idea for a Steam Deck 2 controller is something similar to what the Steam deck has but smaller.

Take a steam deck take the screen/ speakers part out. Bring the two controller ends together reshape slightly and bam. New controller using what they/you already have and has been updated an improved on already. They could save an end up just need to pay for new shell for it to go in. If they don't already have a way to make it there selfs.

I really liked the Steam Controller, if they made a new controller that was just like the Steam Deck but with dual stage triggers I would be happy. I still have mine behind me and I love the look of it even if I don't use it as much nowdays. Man I can't believe Warner Brothers told the devs of the delisted games they where not allowed to go on sale before delisting, cause I really wanted to get a few of them but not at full price :(

I want a steam controller 2 that has the exact same inputs as steam deck so that when I dock it’s the same experience as when I’m handheld. That’s the biggest thing. I don’t care how large that thing needs to be.

I highly doubt FFXVI will run on Steam Deck but since it runs on a heavily modified FFXIV engine (which itself runs decently on medium settings on the Deck) I'm gonna huff on that hopium until the specs drop.

Steam Controller 2, just chop out the screen and keep the steam deck controls as is. Silly rectangle controller would be fine, I need four grip buttons and two track pads to program, I can't go back now. I'll take the return to dual stage triggers though and extra gyros I wouldn't complain. I find myself playing on Deck instead of PC just for the controls and I use everything on it for something.

want the steam controller 2 to be more durable and last longer, manage to use my steam controller for 3 years but the rubber on the analogs sticks wore down, and the R1 button broke (even tho i dont press it that hard) because ive been playing a lot of dark souls. overall its the best controller for me, oh maybe they could add a better heptic feedback.

I prefer both trackpads cause I use the right trackpad as a mouse. Getting rid of that would be bad for me. I can’t live without the right trackpad! I NEED MY MOUSE!! LoL if anything I supposed I could do without the left but I would rather have both! Now I don’t really use the back paddles as much but I like having them there so having at least two would be best for me.
