Damn I love those steam engines. There was some kind of power behind them in those days. Steam kicks butt.

Speed? No. But it is unbothered by your silly sled, and it will be taking it home now.

Lol ! Torque is what gets work done! Horse power is the speed in which it gets done!

@@kevinbrewer9421 indeed. How many horses is that engine? Maybe a classical 5-10, but they are absolute units. Chests to put luggage to shame, necks like gnarled old oak, legs like pile drivers, and muscles so chiseled you could confuse them with granite statues. However even they would be put to pasture by that metal monster. Simply because: it can do that all day. So long as the fire is fed and the boiler is watered.

For 10 horsepower to equal 2000 lb-ft, the engine would have to make 10 HP at 25 RPM.

Should hook the case 150 to the sled or maybe 2 too see if they could stop it.

I would like to see that, in an unlimited bracket. I'm not even sure they use a sled that would be heavy enough to stop it. There is a video on youtube of it pulling a 44 bottom breaking plow, to the beams, in well compacted soil, like it was nothing.

The amount of time taken for the power stroke to occur is insanely long compared to any conventional ice. The ability of steam to continue to expand throughout the power stroke is insane compared to any hydrocarbon/oxygen mixture in a combustion chamber. The gearing is so short it’s almost going backward! This means that torque is not measured in pounds feet, but in tons miles.

With cutoff set to 0 that thing sees full boiler pressure for the entire stroke. The louder it chuffs the less cutoff is in play. Inefficient, but powerful. It has two power strokes per cylinder per revolution, as it's a double acting engine. And if it's a twin cylinder with the crankpins phased 90º apart it cannot stall out because there is ALWAYS a power stroke in play. These things just don't know what it means to run out of torque.

I used to operate a twin cylinder version of one of these. We were always the grand finale of the show. We would take the sled, stoke the fire and *drag it into its shed* about a 1/8 mile away. All while letting rip with that glorious 3-chime whistle. That engine loved pulling so much. You could FEEL it dig its heels in and just *pull*
