For those of us. Who would rush down to the railway lines after school to catch the Glasgow Inverness flyer secretly hoping it had a name as well as a number, indeed praying it was a first time sighting to underlined it in my book brought so much joy,and for those of you who are criticizing don’t try to understand because you never will.........regards....steam man.🚂

As a child in Australia I lived a few kilometers from a railroad. I would often fall asleep to the sounds of a steam engine huffing and puffing and blowing its whistle in the distant. It’s one of my fondest memories from my early life. Thank you for a beautifully shot video (or was it film, which is even more impressive!). From California.

I've read some of the comments about the "wasted" time at the beginning of this video and personally, the soundscape at the beginning builds up the drama of the scene. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience as it showed the main event to its full extent. A steam loco working hard and driven well is more than a visual experience- it is sound as well and the echo of the exhaust from the tunnel and bridges is very much part of it. Those who would've cut out the "wasted" time are missing the point IMHO. If they had their way, the video would start with the loco 30 metres away from the camera and end once it went out of shot. Each to their own I say...

Well said...I've seen photographers 'snap' the engine and scurry off before the train has even begun to pass by - no doubt to rush off to the next location to shoot it again! Savour the moment I say - listen to it getting nearer - and listen to it fade away! Cheers, Will.

This is a work of art. I love the beginning: looking down the track surrounded by 19th century English infrastructure, listening to English fauna in the background, all of it setting the mood. And then, ever so faintly, we here that un-mistakable sound, building to a crescendo as she comes into view. Beautiful, just beautiful.

My Dads allotment use to back on to the railway and the sound and sight of the steam trains coming through and then as the sound faded away the sound of the skylarks and other wildlife would slowly return to fill the void until the next steam train........Just beautiful memories for me of English childhood summer days.......

In India heritage runs with vintage steam engines are organized in the winter months. But unfortunately they don't use the old coaches. I believe the old coaches were mostly made of wood and are either decayed beyond repair or are not safe to run anymore. Many are displayed in various museums though

My only disappointment on my Orient Express trip was that we were pulled by an electric engine! Would have been so “Agatha Christie” if there was a Steam Engine pulling the consist of restored passenger wagons. I did ride a lot of European steam trains when I was stationed in Germany in the 70’s though! Nothing like the distinctive whistle sound of the Daylight 4449, with smoke billowing along the engine top to the streamline cars behind. A special visual treat on the horseshoe curve just north of San Luis Obispo, CA. When one is in the observation car at the rear and better still if it is from the outdoor platform of “Private Varnish”

The interesting thing is that you can pack the entire Hogwarts Magic school student body on that train! I’d say that means 180 students total. Of course, in the Great Hall there looks to be maybe twice that. But the rule is that every student arrives by that single train.

I might be wrong but we only ever see the interior of two coaches. So maybe a few of the coaches have been enchanted to have gigantic interiors to accommodate the entire student body. Or it’s just a standard train for a movie about a magical school.

The single powerful headlamp is so the train can be seen by anyone working on the lineside. I have been on the footplate of A4 60009 Union of South Africa many times at night doing 75mph and as long as you can see the signals that is all that matters. Lets face it, if something is on the tracks you are not going to steer round it.

I also am fond of steam locomotives (in fact, I consider electric or diesel locos only boxes on wheels). I propose of running at least one mail train from four big stations (out of which, three were grand railway terminals) i.e. one from Howrah for South-Eastern Railway, one from Howrah for Eastern Railway, and one from Sealdah for Sealdah-bound Eastern Railway, and one from Chitpore also. May the Mumbai-Howrah Mail, as Mr. Bhaskar proposed, can be among those mail trains, but I think WP Steam Engines (which have been nicknamed "Canadians") should be used in Howrah-Madras since among the first slot of those locos, alongwith Frontier Mail, Taj Express, and Grand Trunk Exp, these engines were used in Howrah-Madras Mail also), and at least one (would be better if more) express trains are hauled by WG or WL class steam locomotives.
