Also love the steam whistle echoing across the valley. Love the video, watching steam trains could be an all day event. As a kid, we would visit grandparents in Miami. Florida East Coast railroad would bring out an old steam locomotive. We would go down to the depot, and watch it come through. The cousins and I would start at one end of the platform to the other end jumping over the steam cloud. The only stipulations, stay on the waiting passenger side of the yellow painted line. A ride on a scenic steam railroad is always worth it. The only other thing that can compare is taking in old vintage warbirds at an airshow.

I road this excursion when I was a kid and was able to jump.on ole Shae Locomotive #5 🚂 . I'll never forget the trip to the top of the Mtn with my family, this is one train trip all family's should take and its like a 2 or 3 hr trip up and back and one of the best times to go is when the full fall leaves have changed. Thanks Jaw Tooth for the memories.

Nice set-up those folks have there son! That whistle is hauntingly beautiful. Really made me go back to my Grampa's living room listening to those record albums of his, boy do I miss him. Late in the evening if I can't sleep I'll sometimes hear the freight line in the distance...it's like his way of saying, "I love you and miss you my dear Grandson..." Great job brother.

Hats off to Cass for keeping those old shays running. I've heard of the railroad but never been there. You can hear the whistle echo off the mountains. Even though there's only crossbucks at the grade crossings you'd have to be dead, dumb and blind not to know a train's coming! Thanks for the trip to Cass.

I went the Cass website. They claim 5 to 10 % grades. That is impressive. I have a nerdy thought for you technical foamers: I believe the Shays can take these grades because all the loco weight is on the drivers, and all the drivers are connected. So adhesion is maximized and wheel slip is minimized. I believe nothing can beat a Shay on steep grades for adhesion RR's. I love this video JT ! Thank you.

He's definitely whistle-happy! I've never seen a flywheel design like that on a steam locomotive. I love these scenic excursions. It'll be one thing I will miss about Colorado. There are many excursion trains in the mountains, both narrow and standard, both steam and diesel. Huge RR history all tied to the mining that once ruled the mountains. Thats an impressive cut-a-way of the pistons moving, that water tower looked it was ready for a lick of paint, certainly unusual having the tender facing forward. You said the gauge was 4'8'',, I think NZ gauge is 4'8" 1/2, unless you go to Aucklands museum "Museum of Transport & Technology" (MOTAT) for short. That whistle in the hills takes me back to a time & place long forgotten. Thanks for your families commitment, love your sons call sign for you, I didn't miss what was said, I used RT's for years in road transport. Keep up the Safe Railfanning.😎👌👍
