You gentlemen deserve many thanks for these videos. There are a lot of beginner prop fans and costumers out here who only need a little guidance in basic techniques to be able to start producing their own steamy creations. Please keep up the good work.

I liked the idea of having feeding or oxygen tubes running into the mouth as I thought it improved the look of the mask.

Man I love your projects! This one is almost 7 years old yet it is just as zoot looking today as when you first posted it! For anyone still wanting to build one of these Bad Boys, I was going to suggest using plain old window screen mesh in place of the tea strainer eye covers. However the window screen is rather tight meshed and may clog up with paint when you are spraying the mask. I will give it a shot when I get around to making one of these. I have just about all the parts needed for your steampunk octopus which is still my first project. I will keep you posted with my results. Again, as always Thank You for sharing your brilliance!!!

Most spray paints I have found look more golden than brassy. The only way round it I have found it to spray the object with brass paint then use a brown wash and finally pick out the highlights with brass acrylic model paint. The brass acrylic paint is a much better brass colour but if you paint large areas with it then you see the brush marks. You may be able to find a better brass colour if you look into airbrush paints.

Love the look of this, really neat how you can use practically anything to make it steam punk looking, you just need to paint it the right colour!

I drilled a hole through the edges of the larger pieces of plastic and through the mask below, then bolted them. I only had to do this on the big pieces that I used to extend the mask because my glue wouldn't hold them in place due to the tension they were under. Be careful where you place these bolts or they could dig into your face. I suggest you cover them inside with some foam and try to limit the number of bolts. Once the glue has set, you may even be able to take the bolts out.

Solved the polystyrene sheet problem. I wanted to buy most of the material local but I couldn't find plastic sheets at any craft or hardware store so I bought a notebook with a thick plastic cover and just used that. It worked fine w/ krazyglue but the pink notebook cover looks very un-steampunk lol. I'll be spraying the mask tomorrow. Also, I used short nylon screws to bolt the forehead and side pieces together and used adhesive faux pearls for the rivets. Very tedious but not very time consuming. I'll send you pics of the mask once I'm finished.

Any type of flexible plastic that you can glue should work. In this case I used Sheet Styrene that I got from a model shop (can also be bought from the internet, just search for sheet styrene).

Wow. Simple, matter-of-fact walk-though and brilliant, inspirational techniques. The air freshener is a stroke of genius and the finish, with the verdigris, looks authentic. I'm featuring this in my Steampunk blog, if you have no objection?

Just the smallest thinnest bolts that I could find, bought from a hardware store (I can't remember the size). They don't need to be strong as they are only holding plastic together, but do use washers with them, to protect the plastic. I did need to trim them down and file them to remove any rough edges.

Hi there! I’m not sure if you ever got the video link I sent you showcasing my version of this awesome mask. If you haven’t seen it, I used plastic/nylon screws and washers instead of metal ones. They were very cheap, and also very short. No cutting necessary. Just a little bit of duct tape to cover it on the inside : )). They are also very easy to paint over.

Ha, yes a unique selling point. I just liked the fact that they looked like oil reservoirs, it didn't even occur to me that you could benefit from the scent. Yes heating the plastic would have made shaping it a lot easier, to be honest it didn't occur to me at the time. I will bear that in mind on future projects. Thanks Nigel.

this is amazing stuff no doubt about it. Those who are not as technically skilled though might be better off practicing with pound shop bits and bats first. It's easy to see great stuff like this and think you can do it as well forgetting the person who made it makes it look easier than it is......some of the time.

Another way to make rivets is to use a hand held leather punch on a plasticard sheet. Keep making holes in the sheet and your rivets will come out the back.
@_itsatrap
9 жыл бұрын
That is probably an easier way to do it. When cutting a plastic rod there is a lot of wastage as the rivets can ping off in random directions.
