Yeah the steel mill worked maintenance in wws nothing like this. It had a fully automated reheat furnace that sent the billet through the rolling process by using a series of vfd drives, encoders, rectifiers, and the plc!

I'm not sure how these workers survived 30 days at the factory. 3 OSHA inspectors passed out on the floor watching this. If you cant find 10 safety violations in the first 5 minutes, you're either blind or drunk.

In the late 70's I worked in the Clyde alloy steel works (BSC Craigneuk works in Scotland uk) They produced high quality Bar, much heavier than shown here, but with the same scope for accidents. We were issued with woolen trousers and Jackets. Wool is fire resistant, but owing to extreme heat we wore woolen trousers and t-shirts. Our steel toe cap safety boots laces would catch fire and steel caps would heat up, we had to lash a pair of rigger gloves to our boots to offer some protection. Gloves and tongs don't work, the tongs slip through, thats why no gloves. Headwear. Officially we had to wear it. But again the heat was unbelievable and cranes only passed over when the mill was clear. Billets in front of you, bars behind you and the bar you were stranding at 700 deg c and weight from 30-90kgs rolling 700 plus per shift. There were surprisingly few serious injuries.

@@monsieurali8484 I do agree with you. I was lucky I only spent 6 years there. But many had worked their entire lives there. The only good point was the actual workers. Some of my happiest memories were from those six years, the humour and stories they told were something I never witnessed again after the mill shut.
