My mother purchased the large green one for my eight-year-old as a SUPRISE gift. She LOVES it and has started learning songs. She woke up this morning at 6:30am to practice. I'm pleased that it's so pleasant to listen to even with her amateur efforts. I played the violin and the trumpet as a child and the first steps learning them weren't nearly as enjoyable for listeners.

I got a 13 note one for Christmas. Here's a tip: take a flashlight and stick it inside the drum. Check for any places where the tongues were not "clean cut". You will need a Very thin metal file to file away any spurs or places where it wasn't cut all the way. That may help clean up any sound issues. One of the song books I ordered says to put a magnet on the back side of the tongues to get them in tune.

Hi Molly! Having never played these instruments, and me, being a drummer/percussionist, the first thing that comes to my mind regarding that "sweet spot" is having many different mallets on hand....its kind of like your color packet. A slightly harder mallet, though hard on the ears, would allow for a more central tone and provide less a chance of missing the correct beating spot. You could try leaving those spots open for your more advanced student. students with the larger sizes should try a tightly yarn wound marimba or vibraphone mallet for a full fundamental tone. If they miss the sweet spot then the sound provided will be very muffled and could really teach them to use their ears and make small adjustments until they hit the sweet spot with more ease as they improve over time. As you probably know, from teaching orff that this is exactly why marimbaists and vibrophonists have tons of mallets in their bags: because we also have sweet spots on our instruments. Use harder mallets for upper register and softer for the mid to low register. You seem very confident in your video so I don't mean to insult your intelligence if you already know all of this but I just wanted to shoot my 2 cents your way hoping it could spark some ideas for you. The drums look and sound awesome and can't wait to get a set for myself....thanks for sharing this awesome percussion instrument with us!
@MusicalMollyKhan
4 жыл бұрын
This is so interesting, thank you! It's been a long time since I trained in Orff and I don't have access to the high quality Orff instruments, so I do a lot of improvising with less expensive pentatonic instruments for my preschoolers. I will definitely have to experiment with more mallets!
@EmoryBlake4Music
4 жыл бұрын
@@MusicalMollyKhan let me know if you need any suggestions for new mallets. Even though I can only judge by the video whether or not certain mallets will work, I can hopefully point you in the right direction. I taught orff classes about 12 years ago, and if I remember correctly we only used hard mallets so that some kind of sound was produced no matter where they struck the bar. So even if one students misses the sweet spot, it can be covered up by those who dont. I'm so glad my advice was helpful for you! Just wondering how you originally discovered these instruments? Because it's very similar to a log drum which percussionists use on a pretty regular basis.

Hi Molly. I bought a 10 inch steel tongue drum from a music store, a couple of days later one of the tongue's went out of tune, so back to the store I went. They were quite helpful in getting the tongue back in tune. The drum that I have has a hole in the base, when looking at the tongue's from the inside of the drum there were small magnets, by moving them a little the tongue came back into tune.
@MusicalMollyKhan
4 жыл бұрын
That's such a neat feature! These drums unfortunately don't come with the magnets, but if you had little ones you could perhaps get it to tune more flat by trying that - I haven't given it a try yet!
@theaudioeng
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've seen videos where small magnets are positioned to lower res. frequency of tongues. So it seems that the tuning 'fixes' are therefore: raising Cents by filing (or I guess if bad, v.small hole drilling), & lowering Cents by adding/shifting v.small Neo disc magnets.... my smaller 6" steel tongue drum due in a few days time, so let's see!! Good tip there jleon 😷🎶👍🍻

Hi Molly, thanks for the wonderful review. I happened to have already bought mine, a 12" Amahi. I just wanted to mention that my drum is tunable, not by filing the tongues, but by magnets on the underside of the tongues that add mass to the tongue. There's a removable disc on the bottom that gives access to the underside. Move the magnets towards the tip and the pitch lowers. Move the magnets away from the tip, it goes sharper. I was able to get this drum (diatonic octave in D with additional low 7, 6, and 5) to correct pitch within a few cents. And let me just add my voice to those who appreciate your kind manner. I bet you're great with the kids! All the best!

I'm grateful for your review. I like putting music on some of the videos on my channel, mostly hiking and outdoor videos. I was doing different things, such as using Garage Band, and was having trouble with copyright pirates making false claims against my videos and stealing revenue. The thing is that Apple licenses the loops to users, so I had rights to them, but it wasn't worthwhile to get a lawyer and fight these people. So I decided to make my music from scratch, mostly using a MIDI keyboard and a wide range of synth instruments. I learned music theory, though I am a real neophyte at that, and it works reasonably well, but I want some of my tracks to include real instruments. I got interested in the tongue drum from an ad, and when I was camping recently I got to use a couple of them made from propane tanks and had so much fun that I knew I wanted to get one. So I started looking for reviews and found you have done one that explains what I need to know all in one video. Now I have an 8" 11 note drum and it sounds great. Music from that drum will be on my next video. While I have been looking at your channel, I have learned a lot about other instruments, and I see a possible ocarina in my future. It's not just children that you are teaching, but the child at heart. I'll make sure you get a shout out from my channel when I do that video, and thanks for all the work you put into this.

Musical Molly Khan whilst I might have your attention, may I pick your brain? My daughter is 11 and autistic. Im looking for a tongue drum for her. I think something easy to play would be best. I’m willing to spend a little bit for something “good”. I think the less she has to fight with it to make it sing would help encourage her. I really think this is going to be the instrument for her. With the given sound (meditative), yet percussion (reactive feedback) in nature. That and I think the rest of us wouldn’t mind this instrument being played poorly as we get started. I’m not musically inclined in anyway. To be honest, its the nomenclature; the physics I more then understand. I intended in using the vocabulary in this video as the base of my research on what to purchase. (Super informative video, has everything I need _even if some of it is over my head_ ). My question to you is, what am I looking for if my daughter wanted to play _most_ music? I’m thinking along the lines of an abridged piano. (if a thing even exists). Would I need multiple drums? If so how many would be Adequate? If I were to start with 1 or 2 what would I want? (This is where the esoteric nature of the vocabulary gets me. Please translate for me) What frequency/wavelength range is each drum capable of and what area of the spectrum would be good to start with? My brain tells me middle ‘c’, but i really don’t know means. Thank you again. 🙇
@farshimelt
4 жыл бұрын
@@chetopuffs You may be overthinking this. Get a drum that fits your budget. Your daughter won't care about the frequency range or the key. Start with one and see if she enjoys it, let her develop on the instrument and if she feels limited get a larger one that fits musically with the one she has. Par Ex.: If you have a drum in the key of C, buy the second one in a complimentary key. Autism is not limiting musically. I have a friend who is autistic and he makes native American flutes and plays them very well.

The Tongue pan. I started listening to the spiritual tones and experimenting more. Playing less than with a hammer. I've been able to produce a sound like a melodic harp. It's caused by very lightly, backwardly dragging the drum sticks very gently backwards over the tongues. Somewhat like making notes through a wet finger on a wine glass but creating a magic harpish sound. I think it's beautiful anyway. To add to the effect I cut small notches into each rubber ball to enhance the harmonic effect. Try standing up to play around the instrument. A string of sounds can be reached. I use a tall narrow water drum. Hope this adds to the fun.

I have never known of this instrument until a few weeks ago. It sounds BEAUTIFUL. Obviously you know them well. I have watched a few videos of very good players and they seem to do the same. My question to you is; if increasing the diameter make it mellower would the material of the stick itself add to that. Maybe using a glass rod or a silver rod?

Great video, a little tip though is to introduce yourself on every video. This is my first time viewing your channel so when you said welcome back, I didn't know your name or the name of your channel, without looking it up of course. Just a friendly tip, thanks for the info, good video.

Please don't take this the wrong way but maybe they send the cheaper one on purpose during covid it could take seasons many months but the right ones sound great.

Do you think that coating the numbers with clear nail polish would help them stay on? Or would that interfere or change the tone? You have such a pleasant manner. Thank you for your great videos.

Hi I have quite a few tongue drums, started out with a hapi and a Garahand. I want ALL the notes so I buy 2 cheap drums of the same kind, then tune them with a hacksaw blade. One drum is diatonic, the other I tune the D E G A and Bs a half step flat. It just requires deeper cuts with the saw. I like to combine drums like two 6 inches tuned this way, a 10 inch pentatonic and two 12 inch drums tuned as a chromatic pair as well. Gives more octaves as well as more tonal possibilities, each drum has differnt overtones. I paint the notes on each drum, and they are color coded as well. Avoid the 6 inch drums with the oversized "5" tongue....these are sold as D major scale, but they are pentatonic and 3 of the tongues are very flat, and you can't easily correct that.

This is a brilliant idea! I may have to do this at some point in the future, it would be so lovely to have a more chromatic range 😊

@@MusicalMollyKhan Thanks! You should hear them! Ive got a set of 6 inchers, which was my prototype, and I just finished doing a set of 12 inchers. Sounds amazing! Seems to me these instruments are not taken seriously by "real musicians", and they are more for hippie types or music therapy or little kids. Im planning on some further customisations that will blow anything out there away! Just be sure you wear gloves or buy a mini hacksaw handle, when you cut the tongues! Im nursing some pretty painful blisters!

Can you turn the Tongue Drum into a drum kit like Hi-hats and Toms etc. or can you just play tunes on it? Thanks.

I have a 10 inch steel drum. Which has all the keys a 12 inch one do. ( I got it yesterday as a birthday present. But my real birthday is on Tuesday. ) But If it is diatonic or not I can’t tell. Cuz I haven’t figured out what that means.. x

Great question! The easiest way to tell is to look at the numbers. If there are "4"s or "7"s then it's diatonic - which basically means it has all the notes of the scale it's tuned to! 😊

Hi Molly-thank you for all of your instruction! I’ve enjoyed and am in the process of learning! I have a question. I have a 13 not drum (its green - I know you wanted to know 🙂) and many of the songs that I’m finding that offer tabs or notes for people like me have both the number 4. Am I able to play the songs that offer the 4 with the dot? I’m struggling to find the answer. Thank you!!!

Thank you for your videos, you really know a lot about this type of instrument. I purchased a 12" drum in C Major for my daughter but we are it not sure where to start. It came without the numbers. I could surely stick some numbers on it but not sure which number corresponds to which note. Could you make a video for beginners who have no background in music? Thanks!!

I can do that! For now, download a tuner onto your phone (I recommend Pano tuner) to see which notes are which. Then place the numbers as follows: C is 1, D is 2, etc. Then A is 6 and B is 7 😊

In the world of tongue drums, the bigger ones are generally better, but what really matters is that the more notes a tongue drum has, the better it is.

@@yyutopian Thanks for the reply- It was more of a tongue in cheek reference to size doesn't matter but in some cases as in the drum it does to a degree but I agree the accuracy of the tuning and the flexibility of the metal, the consistency in the manufacturing process will all either help or hinder the quality of the tone and the accuracy of the note. I have made some xylophones myself out of rebar/cold rolled steel/ various diameters of copper tubing and getting tuning is really tricky- Especially the rebar ones which have an extra zing high pitch tone because of the strange nature of the ribs on the rebar. Anyway enjoyed the video take care.

very well made video and perfect answers to my questions. thank you so much. and i was right, it is look like a cheaper replica of an hang drum, similar idea behind. But the story was, that a hang drum has a tonality, that is able to play this instrument without learning it before. So important that the sounds are in the scale that makes this instrument so magical and deep intensive. I said exactly this night to a friend, a cheap way maybe, but i think they just want set up a object on amazon to feed this group of people who wants this. And i dont believe they understand why a hang is a very special instrument. So the last one sounds good, but this is not i am looking for, i will purchase it

Thank you! Yes, I think the scale of the drum makes a big difference as to how playable and what feeling it gives to a person without much musical experience. The big drum is tunable to different scales with magnets though :)
