I use regular JB Weld. You can just use flexible cutting board sheet from the dollar store to back your backing. Then when it hardens you just flex it and the stones pop right off. You can use it over and over. Thanks for sharing.

The other cool technique I've developed for epoxy backing and other fine work (Yes, I should make a video) is to mix up regular JB Weld, spoon it into the corner of a ziploc bag, trim the tiniest corner of the bag, and squeeze it where you want it like a miniature cake icing decorator. When you're done you can just toss the squeezed out bag. Works great.

Thank you Dave! I come from a family of no lapidary experience.a few special rocks. When my mother passed I found a can of turquoise colored rock with very little veining. It is beautiful, I am sure my mother got it for use with her floral design. But it is very fragile. I hope to find someone who can cab me 4 small stones for rings the girls in the family. I worried it could not be done, so glad for your info. I am hopeful . Thanks again.

I use an epoxy clay called Apoxie Sculpt when making mosaics, and I suspect it might work great for this application! Comes in a bunch of colors, I always use the black, and it is an attractive deep flat black. Roughly 30 minute working time!

@@lapidarydave ooh! I just checked the price of Steelstik at Home Depot versus Apoxie Sculpt on Amazon, and if I’m doing my math right, a one pound quantity of Apoxie Sculpt actually works out to be cheaper per ounce than the two ounce roll of Steelstik! (Though my math might be suspect; I’ve noticed that my version of pandemic brain seems to involve losing my ability to reliably do simple math, which is embarrassing 😁)

Hiya Dave, that's Awesome! Hey that's a great idea for some Louisiana opals I have that are very brittle. Thanks for the idea. You always give the best ideas away. Quite a few years back, someone came out with Hard/as/steel it was taking the world by storm, cutting all of J.B. wields profits, so they came out with some. J.B wields isn't as hard as the other one, but will work in a pinch. I hope you have a great day, a safe and healthy blessed day also. Cya!

I would definitely give it a shot with the opals maybe even try the marine The white version which is also at Walmart for like waterproofing things I would totally like to try that hard as steel stuff I love that they were giving JB Weld a run for their money
@1catfishuntermiller753

@@lapidarydave ya, that's why their making it, the hard as steel stuff is really hard, I've bought it at NAPA and I've bought them probably 10 yrs ago and it's still good, if you put it on something, to get it off you'd have to grind it off. So what your using it for would work really well, the JB wield doesn't last as long for some reason, and the black dots JB just doesn't mix well, where the other mixes really well. I've fixed my aluminum boat with Hard as steel 15 yrs ago and it's still there, and acetone will not dissolve it, I mixed it with my fingers ( once) it had to wear off. Lol

A very informative video. That's an interesting concept. I wonder if you could make a very small Mosaic using that material. Maybe mixing different types of stones into one cab or using tiny pieces into a single cab. Very interesting!
