In my opinion the "Aja" album is the perfect album. Everyone that worked on that album are true master musicians.

This is definitely a top 10 Steely Dan song and you're spot on about the phrasing in the chorus. The piano playing on this album is so lush and gorgeous, courtesy of the great Michael Omartian

Michael McDonald's best backing vocal effort with them. Best drummer they ever used Jeff Porcaro (sorry BP fans)

Michael McDonald in the background makes the song for me besides the wonderful guitar solo. Too bad the songs on this album are so damn short. Enjoying your comments as usual.

Your Pretzel Logic judgement might be too soon. Once through anything that SD did is never enough. As much as you might be taken with some of the songs straight away, you underestimate the power of the others to draw you in through repeated listening. And some of those other songs could one day be favoured over what you now think are the better ones.

Really going to enjoy listening through the rest of this album as it's posted. I haven't heard all of it in awhile. Great stuff. The next 2 albums - The Royal Scam and Aja are my personal favorites.

I'm pretty sure, given the context that the bad in bad sneakers was the good bad. Describing a good moment in life then they were where they wanted to be (New York) in their stomping grounds with a large sum of money. Remember, they didn't make this video.

Michael McDonald has said that it was Donald and Walter who really put him thru his paces, with complex voicings in the vocal harmonies, in this album, as well as the Aja album.... that they essentially taught him how to showcase his vocal abilities using non-conventional voicings.... the rest, as they say, is history, as Michael McD went on to become a legend in his own right...

Michael- the Dan just gets better with every listen. So nuanced and complex their songs stand the test of time. When you go back through their catalog, it’s like rewatching a movie so good, you realize you missed a few parts!

I was born in '65 so, I've had plenty of the "Chucks." And yes, arguably the worst things to ever go on one's feet. Lol, probably why most people my age suffer from "flat feet." Ugh...can't believe I played basketball for so long in those things.

One of my favorite things about this song is that you can clearly hear the distinctive tones of Mike McDonald in the background vocals. I believe all the BG voices here are him, multi-tracked. McDonald has commented regarding other work he did for the Dan about how challenging it was to keep pitch on all those super-tight chord changes... and having done some amateur choral singing myself, I can totally feature that.

You can never go wrong with steely dan. They had such a unique sound!! Love them, grew up listening 2 them! 70's was just great music. You had Motown pushing out great soulful music & on the soft pop side you had groups like steely dan, little river band, firefall, bread, & too many others 2 list. Great era 4 music. Wish they would bring this era back again.
