Namaste, Savio--you nailed the lyrics re someone with a gambling addiction (and other unsavory traits)! Steely Dan's lyrics are generally well-crafted with tales about assorted questionable characters, accompanied by very sophisticated and well-engineered instrumentation that enhance the lyrics. I very much enjoy this reaction channel--keep up the great work!

Such a well crafted song ! Besides being imbued with a mysterious mood musically, Donald Fagen’s clever lyrics are some of his finest. Love his rhyme “Your black cards can make you money, so you hide them when you’re able. In the land of milk and honey, you must put them on the table.”

Willphil3399 Good way to start ! That' roughly the same age as when I discovered AM radio in the early 60s, pre-Beatles era. Went from The Mickey Mouse Club to Beatlemania to the explosion of great music from late 60s onward. I was slain by the 70s British Invasion, so SD wasn't on my map until much later, when I did a lot of rediscovering of their smart songs.

I remember in 1983 when a band called 'Club House' released 'Do It Again/Billie Jean' Medley. I knew the Michael Jackson song but not the Steely Dan one until that moment it came into the charts. I was a young 15 year old back then lol.

The solo in the middle is actually an electric sitar,played by Denny Dias. As for the organ,I forget the exact model,but Fagen hadn't been able to get the sound he had in his head out of any keys they had in the studio (Fagen and Becker were notorious sticklers for every note being EXACTLY what they wanted) and he found this organ,almost a toy it was so cheap,in a thrift shop and it got the tone he wanted.

There are many Steely Dan songs that are absolute gems. This song was written by Walter Becker (RIP) and Donald Fagen, who sings it from debut album “Can’t Buy A Thrill” in 1972.

Not really, it's called a Coral Electric Sitar, but it's a guitar with a bridge that causes the buzzing sitar-like sound. There are actual electric sitars today which the guitarist on that track most likely wouldn't know how to play.
@KawaTony1964

@@eximusic You are correct. There's an article about the "Electric Sitar" on Wikipedia. I think what confuses the situation is that the special guitar is commonly referred to as an "electric sitar" when it's not really anything like the traditional acoustic sitar. They shouldn't be allowed to call it a sitar.
@eximusic

@@KawaTony1964 I think if there had been any American sitar makers at the time they would have been prevented from naming it an Electric Sitar or sued after the fact. Just like you can no longer call Napa sparkling wine, champagne.

The solo was played on a Coral Electric Sitar which is really just an electric guitar with a wood block bridge like the jawari on a sitar that causes the buzzing sound. The player is a guitar player, not a sitar player.

One of my favorite songs of theirs. Basically, it's about recidivism - you vow to stop doing the stupid stuff that's ruining your life, and then you turn right around and "Do It Again". (In my opinion, the first verse makes the most sense if you picture it as taking place in a cowboy movie.)
