Bayside is a neighborhood in Queens NYC. 'Lonnie' is Lonnie Younge, a now deceased painter/artist who shared a dorm floor w/ Becker and Fagen at Bard College - and who like most in their circle, often 'partied' to excess'. That's why he 'swept the play room, swallowed up all he found and it was 48 hours till he got sober again. They were keen on tequila, beer, vodka, but also dug lots of cannabis, hash, and psychedelics too - LSD, Mescaline, DMT. Fagen talks about it in his 'autobiography' , 'Eminent Hipsters'. In the summer of 1965, right before he started his freshman year at Bard, Fagen had his own very fist LSD experience, courtesy of a neighbor's older brother, who bought the tabs from a connection in - you guessed - Boston. So IMHO, 'The Boston Rag' is LSD. Boston and Harvard University is were LSD proponents and faculty assistance professors Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert held their initial Psychedelic experiments, starting in 1961, when it was all still legal. So the city of Boston got that rep. I say the line 'sweet things from Boston', from 'Hey Nineteen', references the same thing - in this case sugarcubes laced w/LSD, as was common around 1967. When you take LSD, it looks like everything is 'moving', 'alive', the inanimate objects look like they're 'dancing' - Hence, 'The Boston Rag'.

So glad someone dipped their toe into this one. Die hard fans of their music often put this in the top 10 despite it being a little too minor for many radio tunes. The guitar solo at the end goes from a faint cry to a just...GREASY, nasty ripping piece. Love it.

Bayside is where the story took place. Our Lady of Bayside was the Catholic Church's Virgin Mary Statue. So, he's refering to the girl he had a crush on, as being a staunch virgin. "You were Lady bayside, there was nothing that I could do..." "So I pointed my car down 7th avenue", perhaps refering to the red light district.

I don't know that getting Becker or Fagen's take on these songs would be all that definitive. One of the great things about the band's compositions is that they aren't fully fleshed out, or overly detailed. With The Dan, you might get the urgency and pathos without the full context, the shadows and shady characters involved in intrigues without having to be led around by the nose. You get all that and much more, along with just enough nuance and texture for you to create your own cinematic experience within your own head. I've always felt that this was the genius of their writing, to offer up these glimpses of worlds both real and imagined that extend an invitation to the listener to come aboard for the ride. If I had my pick of any band to score the soundtrack to my own dreams, it would be Steely Dan.

I always had the impression that The Boston Rag they were referring to was a style of music, probably from the early 20th century (even Ragtime). Songs like Gaslight Rag, Maple Leaf Rag, and Blind Willie McTell's Georgia Rag come to mind.

It's great to see someone take this journey. You're doing it the right way, walking through each track in each album. You will be more appreciative and, honestly, astonished by how much their music matures from "Can't Buy A Thrill" to "Aja" and "Gaucho". If your interested in hearing directly from Donald Fagen about his process, search the following phrase on KZitem: "donald fagen concepts for jazz rock piano". Then just go down the list of various videos where he explains how songs like "Peg" and "Josie" were conceived and written. You'll learn all about the Mu-Major chord that Fagen uses in their more jazz-influenced songs, that gives them their signature sound. And you'll have a better understanding of how truly genius these guys were / are...

For some reason, I never gave this track the attention it deserves, but it is as gleaming a diamond as there is in the Dan catalogue. A concise and moving word puzzle. Something urgent is happening between the narrator, Lonnie and Lady Bayside, and it isn’t good. Dunno what the Boston Rag is, But the groove is infectious.

Cool to see you on the Steely Dan musical journey. Wait until you get to Dr. Wu from “Katy Lied.” Lyrically, very much influenced by Dylan (like so many), the obtuseness, heavy use of metaphor, the overall crypticness, some more than others. To be sure, they paint pictures with both lyric and melody. Very cinematic. Many songs (not all) relate to their college days and overall, some degree of drugs, booze, sex, the darker side and people in strange circumstances involved, often with a dose of sly humor to make it go down easier. Sometimes. You almost have to go online for many songs where, especially Fagen, has dropped clues and hints here and there. Others more straightforward. Lots of online message boards with opinions. Dylan songs too.

I always thought it was about an old newspaper and how it flourished in the 60's. As with ALL Dan masterpieces, the interpretation is with the listener. They write in analogies a lot of the time, but in a super-intelligent and eloquent way. Steely Dan - Unique.

Debating the meaning of Steely Dan lyrics is a longtime and passionate hobby of Danfans everywhere! :-D I tend to think of their song-storytelling as being like Tarantinoeque movie plots, told with hipster irony and impressionistic details, and just enough ambiguity that they can often be interpreted a bunch of different ways. Enjoy!

I'd have to say that all around, musically, Steely Dan is my favorite. Their tight instrumentals and Fagan's smooth-ass voice is magical! Almost everything about them is obscure. From their name ( Wm S Burroughs reference) to their lyrics about the stock market crash of the early 1900's: just enjoy the sound is my advice. ♥

The word "rag" was used back in the late 1800's through to the 1930's to refer to "ragtime", which was a form of Jazz and Blues music. Fagan probably put in Boston Rag for personal reasons, which he doesn't clarify. He did that a lot. Much of his lyrics are either self referential (therefore mysterious to anyone not close to him) or a reference to literature, music, or other cultural subjects, but he usually is referring to something that is obscure or he mentions it in a way that is hard to decipher. Such is the way of Steely Dan. To say "Bring back the Boston Rag/ Tell all your buddies that it aint no drag" could be interpreted to say: "Let's bring back the good ole days. They were much simpler (or) styled better". That's what I always assumed anyway. The guitar middle section, the rythem of it with piano, drums and guitars, is a slow "rag-" style rythem. Jazz, very old-school Jazz.
