Holm's is an athletic prodigy! I don't see any sophisticated penultimate step mechanics prior to entering his spring. The upper and lower limb lengths (lever ratios) immediately draws my attention. The next factors of importance entail motor, and specialized muscular speed/strength development. Holm's is a remarkable athletic product! Franklin Jacobs is another high jump spring monster that should not be forgotten!

Why does someone have to be tall to have strong muscles? ... I would imagine a person would just have to be really fit, and lean.
@sabineb.5616
Жыл бұрын
@@wayando , I think that athlets who are great jumpers, cannot be too bulky because it would increase the weight of the body which needs to be moved from one place to another, but all successful jumpers need explosiveness. Many great long-jumpers are also great short-distance sprinters, but they are bulkier than high-jumpers. All world class high-jumpers are quite thin and tall, and their legs are very long. I need to research this, but my guess is that the center of gravity of their bodies is higher, and tall high-jumpers with long legs don't need to hurl their butts as much upwards as smaller athlets. And it's also possible that tall high-jumpers have a mechanical advantage because of their long limbs. As I said, I need to research this in order to fully understand, why all worldclass high-jumpers are tall and thin. While many long-jumpers are also great sprinters, the same cannot be said about high-jumpers. Most of them are probably too tall for being able to compete with the best sprinters.

I went to my first high school track meet with my junior high school track team. I liked the high jump even then. I went to watch the high jumpers and one very tall guy passed until making only one jump in his sweat suit 6'4" - that was it. He jumped for Akron Buchtel High School, OH. As to this guy, practice makes perfect. If today's jumpers learned to kick their feet over the bar like this guy did it here they would have a lot more success. Especially the women. I am not sure anyone will ever get over eight feet again but it would still be interesting. BTW, if you're wondering what year that was, you'll have to look it up. My running partner was a guy named Martin McGrady. Multiple world records at the time and one of the greatest runners of all time. The only person I have ever seen to come close to him in style is Athing Mu. It would be interesting to see a video of both of them running the 400m (or 440):-)

@@Poppillon Yup. Very average compared to other high jumpers, as I said above "just not what you expected from a world class explosive type of jumper". But I don't think it was bad compared to even the elite non-jumping athletes (not to mention the "Average Joe", but that isn't what we are talking about). It's interesting that he could transform his great approach speed to that world class upward jump. Guess it's a combination of very stiff tendons (with the right length attaching the muscles in the perfect way) giving back energy in plyometric type of jumps, great CONSISTENT technique and the fact that he often stayed injury free (he was almost never injured) I got the impression that he was a very smart guy(I am Swedish and he has been, which of course helps too when it comes to such a complex sport as high jumping. He seems to be the on the geeky side of things (almost borderline Aspie), being into statistics about everything(also being educated as a statistician) , builds things in LEGO as an adult still (which is perfectly fine and cool) etc. Ie a guy that can analyze everything about training and himself and make the next session just a little bit better than the last. It also helped that he had a father that was obsessed with the sport helping him as a great trainer something Stefan does with his son nowadays. It will be VERY interesting to see what Melwin Lycke Holm will be able to accomplish in a couple of years. He has already broken lots of unofficial age group records and, if he stays injury free, he could be the next great Holm jumper. I think he also is a little bit taller than Stefan was when he was as young as Lycke in the different age groups. Maybe we could have the next Sotomayor if Melwin gets taller than Stefan by a margin...?
