Never has the saying "You can't polish a turd" been more appropriate! Jesus guys the finish is shocking.

I would choose a concrete counter top any day of the week, its the same stuff as what you walk on. The moisture wont do anything to the finish, its a stain, typically, which means that it wont be messed up with water. Also you seal it, like you do a slab, so there is nothing to peel off. This stain soaks into the concrete and basically is the new color of the concrete. Plus you dont have to worry about dropping a pan on it, just dont take a hammer to it and it should stand the test of time

The substrat is cut so as to strengthen the edge of the pour. if the substrat is left at a 90deg, it provides for a weak point in the concrete directly at that corner.

Tie wire is scored so once it is twisted off and removed no wire will show. You can then use a profile edging tool to smooth out any rough spots.

as the video says, a typical 2" poured countertop weighs about 25# per sq ft. unless your cabinets just suck, they should hold it no problem. also, when you lay your 3/4" CDX deck, that will help distribute the weight quite nicely.
@garyroxene

..even the brown would not have been quite so bad - but - using a gloss finish? YUK! It amplifies EVERY imperfection. The end product looks VERY amateur when it could have been great.. these guys need to do another finish to show how wonderful concrete tops can look.
@essexhudsonurology1369

if you add a specific aggregate to the concrete and after it cures polish the edges and surface to expose the aggregate, the final finish may be a nicer cosmetic final finish. Similar to concrete sinks and the like. It would add the work and special equipment to sand/polish it which is no small feat.

the colour spoil the counter top
@refusoagaino6824
8 жыл бұрын
+Chris ram The color is hideous, almost all the acids and stains result in dark, muddy "colors". I've used latex paint with some success, you need a lot more than you think so it displaces other liquid (water) and adds an unknown "additive" quality. Other than that, these guys are good and it shows that although concrete counters are basically easy, there is nothing like experience and skill. Concrete doesn't forgive like other materials, that are easy to correct. And like staircases, you probably won't build that many in your life, unless that's all you do, so it's difficult to speak with 'lots' of experience unless you're a pro.

I made my cement outside kitchen, built in sink and grill. using rebar and 2x4, chip board for the framing. I handmade all the ceramic tiles. It took two years for me to do this. After days of curing, Just water hose the cement a few times. The chip board will swell and just fall off. I gladly will send pictures. This would cost $20,000 if it was contracted out.

@refusoagaino6824

+BJEAKE All true, it's why I'm keeping the bullnoses and other decorations out of the design. Straight, level and slick and as thin as you can, the bridge between the front of a sink and the edge of the counter can be almost 30" long and only a few inches square, in cross sectional area. Putting rebar in that space is delicate but critical and the depth of the concrete has to stay at 1 1/2" minimum. In ten years some football player type will sit or even step on it. When they say the cabinets don't need to be reinforced, I'd argue some. Mushboard (MDF) cabs don't even support themselves after ten years.

To tell people there are better options out there for their money. A sealed hardwood or cheap Formica counter top would be better than this. Concrete is probably one of the worst materials to use for a counter top. It's brittle, it's porous and bad for bacteria. It is also far too heavy for the volume needed to get a strong enough structure. Do I need to continue?
