A couple of weeks ago I pressed these rear axle bearings for Alex’s 1965 Mustang Coupe.
He’s had the car for about six years now and an early mod, upgrading to the SSBC rear disc brakes (using ‘80s Ford calipers) proves to have insufficient parking brake application. We live in the northern Utah, and it’s not exactly flat land here. So after some discussion he decided to go with the newer Wilwood rear disc brake kit with the integral drum parking brake in the rotor hat, a pretty slick setup that is working much better.
But to install this kit, the factory axle retaining plates have to be removed from the axle. The options are, cut them off or press the bearings off. Well, when the bearings were discovered to be noisy and the axle seals a bit marginal, it was an opportune time to do some advanced maintenance and service the entire rear axle assembly with fresh seals, bearings, and fluid.
This video shows the entire process required to swap out rear axle bearings, start to finish.
