Norwegian music program „Theme with variations“ in episode "Meeting with musicians" feat Vladimir Ashkenazy, Stephen Bishop and Robert Levin.
Two world pianists met by chance in Oslo, where they also met their Norwegian colleague Robert Levin. Recordings were made in a television studio with a program that was planned at short notice - the two foreigners play, among other things, four-handed after notes that they got to try just before the recording. Host: Robert Levin; Director: Bjørn Bryn; First broadcast NRK1 · Wednesday 14 June 1967.
Vladimir Davidovich Ashkenazy (born 6 July 1937) is an internationally recognized solo pianist, chamber music performer, and conductor. He is originally from Russia and has held Icelandic citizenship since 1972. Ashkenazy was born in Gorky, Soviet Union (now Nizhny Novgorod, Russia), to pianist and composer David Ashkenazi and to actress Yevstolia Grigorievna (born Plotnova). His father was Jewish and his mother came from a Russian Orthodox family. Ashkenazy was christened in a Russian Orthodox church.
Stephen Kovacevich (born 17 October 1940) is an American classical pianist and conductor. He is particularly celebrated for his recordings of works by Beethoven, Bartok and Schubert, and is known for technical skill, clarity of playing and an intelligent approach to interpretation. Stephen Kovacevich was born in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California, to a Croatian father and an American mother. When his mother remarried, his name was changed to Stephen Bishop, the name under which he performed in his early career. He later discovered that he was often being confused with the singer and guitarist Stephen Bishop. To avoid the confusion, he began performing as Stephen Bishop-Kovacevich and later simply as Stephen Kovacevich.
Robert Levin (6 June 1912 - 29 October 1996) was a Norwegian classical pianist and composer. Although he was an accomplished solo pianist and composer, Levin received international acclaim for his work as an accompanist with several of the world's most celebrated vocal and instrumental performers. Levin was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway. He grew up in the immigrant neighborhood in Grünerløkka, the child of David Levin (1882-1936) and Marie Scheer (1885-1954). Both were Jewish refugees from Lithuania who had immigrated in 1905. Levin's father supported his family through various means, including peddling sewing notions and carting coal.
