A perfect rendition, definitely my favorite; captures perfectly the pathos, the emotion of being tired, drunk, broke and lonely.

I don't think anyone has covered Gordon's song so beautifully. I learned this tune as a teenager from an Ian and Sylvia in '65 record and I've been trying to get it right ever since. Bravo, Stephen. The next time you bring the Rodeo Kings back to Oregon, I'll thank you in person.

This is, without question, the most beautiful version of this song I've ever heard. A tear comes easy.

I return many times and today 8-30-21 to hitch a ride on Stephen's musical journeys. He has indescribably depth and evokes such emotions and vistas I see with his amazing sustained and dissonant chords and unique key signature. He's some kind of genius and re-invented this song! I see too camera flashes as it's like people want to hang onto such fine moments in life like hearing, feeling... Stephen's magic.

This song made me want to learn guitar and sing. I was a young boy delivering early morning newspapers in Vancouver. I knew a lot about the rain, then. Great performance, my friend!

Hi Set Ter! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner as probably by now you've been trying to play Early Morning Rain in open D tuning. I was mistaken. Stephen was very nice to email me despite a lot going on, good, being busy with family etc. but still took the time. He said he tunes to a double dropped D meaning the first (highest) and sixth (lowest) strings or the "E" strings are dropped down to D. I had been playing in open D tuning as I described to you for so long I've discovered my own interpretations of this very well written song. It was funny as once I tuned it to double dropped D for me it didn't work as well ha! I hope I helped! Happy Playing!

***** Hi! I looked at facebook to see if you asked Stephen which open tuning he is playing in. I'm just an amateur so take with a grain of salt ha... but I got brave and tried... I think he's playing in open D tuning with capo of course on the second fret. Also I think he's playing these beautiful "Sus" chords as experienced musicians say... but I might be completely wrong. So open tuning DADF#AD... at least that's the way I tuned it and tried in some terrible way to follow at least fragments of some of his chords, but wow he's so phenomenal. I hope I helped in some small way.

mwj5368 hi, thanks. No I didn't go to the Facebook page. I was just curious about the tuning, (was pretty sure it was open) as it lent itself to some very pretty chords. After reading what you said, it was clear to me that he definitely was using some "sus" chords to good effect. The open tunings change the colour of the instrument, and the capo changes things again. One day I'll try out open D with capo at the 2nd fret, and see if I can come up with something a bit similar. Thank you for sharing with me.

@@terset9912 Hi! In case you missed it before Stephen emailed me and said he was playing in "double dropped D" meaning it's in standard tuning except the 6th or lowest string is a dropped D and the 1st or highest string is tuned to D also. So I guess DADGBD. Saying this 10 years later ha! I did mention it many years earlier above. I'm just writing this in case you missed it.
