Stephen Fry would be such a delightful person to know. Imagine for a second if he was your favourite uncle... You'd never read a stupid self help book again. You could just ask him for a piece of his mind. I'm really glad that he is out there on KZitem, we are all better for it.

Setting goals is fine. The problem is WHY we set the goals we set. For instance, if your mom needs surgery but can't afford it, and neither can you afford it, you might set a goal and work hard toward getting enough money to get her the surgery. That is a wholesome goal which I think destiny will support as you work toward it. Problem is we're a bunch of intellectual animals running around setting nothing more than self-centered, egotistical goals. There is little love in our daily motivations.

Why does stephen fry care so much about being liked, life isn't about being like life is about living, being nice to each other, some people are introvert some extrovert, we all have different opinions that's what makes it fun, why just do things to be liked watching this makes people feel 10 again Oh OH no people won't like me. he did say a few great things and one was definitely talk to more people and be nice to each other and the more people you talk to the more you get out of life :)

I have heard of the Sadhus and I do have admiration for them, but I don't see that their thoughts are mutually exclusive from Stephen Fry's. You seem to be quite preoccupied with the idea that actors have nothing to contribute, but the fact that he's an actor is pretty much irrelevant. He's also a writer and a comedian, two groups of people who tend to be particularly perceptive and insightful.

yes i find the human obsession with oneself quite interesting in the fact that we say say things like my computer or my house which in a way does belong to you and that there is no other way to put that without saying my but then we say thing like MY girlfriend or my father or my mother or my pet, instead of I am her boyfriend or I am his/her son. Another thing i find interesting is our obsession and yet shame of sex but i don't have the characters necessary for that!

In my experience, emos tend to be negative and endlessly self-pitying in the face of their relative privilege, but what Stephen Fry is saying is very positive and life-affirming. Don't you think it's a bit shallow to dismiss it as "emo" whenever someone talks about the fundamental nature of human experience? Is there anything more important, when you come down to it?

It's a little late, but if anybody ever says "just because he said so", tell them to look up the biblical apocrypha. In the Thomas evangelion for instance a kid steals Jesus' toy (i think it was a ball or smth) and Jesus let's his hand wither. Later another falls down a roof and Jesus revives him, but is accused of having pushed the kid. TBH I'm not as much of a fan of them for most part, mainly because they are overused by atheists as arguments and because they are younger than the others IIRC

"I think goal orientation is absolutely disastrous in life". I think he's wrong. Very wrong. I think setting the wrong goals is dangerous. First you need to know yourself, and the you need to find what makes you happy, and then you should set goals to enable to do with makes you happy. They'll be different for everyone. Just ask yourself are you setting this goal for the right reasons. That's it. Without goals you'll have no direction.

yes but you are completely wrong. people who dont give a shit about being popular and commit themselves to learning and understanding a subject are the ones who end up with great minds and do great things. People who dedicate themselves to becoming popular and being charming will probably end up good at it, will lead to power sadly to the detriment of humanity those who wish to lead are the least qualified to do so. Popular, charming people are not necessarily nice people Mussolini, Stalin etc

All this talk as if Fry is some thug who won the jackpot. If he was innately odious he'd still be a criminal. This is clearly a case of a troubled (and to a certain extent oppressed) but talented young man, discovering a means of creativity and self expression. Once he mixed with similarly high functioning individuals surrounded by a vast archive of knowledge to stimulate him, he became hooked on good honest work. It means with lots of dedication and a bit of luck, you can turn your life around.

Good grief, you made a documentary about the Komodo Dragon - a subject you admitted to knowing absolutely nothing about. A free trip to Indonesia for you, plus some more license fee payers money in your back pocket - & let the reptile specialist you had your side do all the factual talking. The BBC's idea, I'm sure, but you agreed to it. And this was just 2 weeks after Attenborough had broadcast about the exact same subject. Fry eye candy.

hes so wrong about friendless people talking about themselves all the time. he gives the impression of someone who has lived a pretty sheltered life and knows little of how things really are for people who didnt get in at oxbridge, basically the advise he gives is to be a sycophant which im sure is probably true but very depressing at the same time. i wonder where him insulting people over twitter fits into all this, all people of lower status than him of course.

Of course you're right. Romania also has many great thinkers and many of them achieved important things. But the bottom line is drawn when the respective country acknowledges its smart people. Brancusi has his own museum in Paris, while in Romania they tried to pull down one of his sculptures with a tractor. I've lived in the UK for 3 years now and although some people still regard me as a low life immigrant, I've had a better time making a name for myself here.Enjoy your country, it's a good one

you properly misunderstood what I meant a year ago, 'those who embrace and study these things become great minds' at least in my mind does not mean 'those who want to become popular' to me its more about finding it interesting why we want what we want, and note that I never said that all great minds are interested in this kind of thing. about your point regarding my 'great leaders' comment: conquering the will to be liked does not seem to have the necessity of being a nice person. to me atleast

Emo stands for emotional. A "true emo" is a sad little person who constantly whines about life. You know, they're "emotional". It isn't a fashion (the clothes just fit the whole depressed look). Cutting one self also seems to be rather popular in that "culture". Sounds idiotic to me. Also, I don't follow fashion trends. I do what I like, and wear what I find comfortable. I know this is going to sound ironically emo of me, but I am not a conformist pig (unlike the emos. Again, irony. It's fun).

@pinochet222 you obviously don't know anything about him, so your opinion is completely invalid and ridiculous. he was struggling with his homosexuality in schools and particularly a time when it was totally frowned upon. he was bipolar and suffered through a lot of depression, i don't see how being brought up well and having a education at notoriously good schools makes you a spoiled teenager.
