I've the blue-blue edition with the Viking logo being gold / coppery. But, I noticed that the blue-gold version has the Viking logo in blue[!] - So I figured it might be either an error / misprint for a few batches. Or, deliberate action to mark [as the concept you mentioned too] the third party printing company. Say, someplace in North USA a printing company makes a 150,000 units while the [let's call it] in-house printing manufactures 200,000, maybe someplace down south. One of them marks the books with the "gold" text in the title [leaving the Viking logo blue, resembling a "blind stamp"] and this way it's easy to follow how many books were made in a certain printing factory. There's books with gutter numbers too. I mean, they kind of keep track on batches for a long time, and I think we sae / see the innovations as books are being made and sorted [for lack of better word] ... crazy, ain't it? It's interesting for us, fans, for casual and serious collectors but I've a notion that down in the engine room of the business it can be useful, if not significant to be able to follow up items manufactured from a certain budget to actually be able to react swiftly in case a wrench gets in the works. And let us not forget it's the 1980s and today's technology was not available then, so wireless-bluetoothonlinetracking-and-drone-trucking options and checks are not available. It's only my humble opinion, of course, but interestingly, one of the few haunting questions have been for a while to me the very same. For some years, secretly. And today, I'm happy I stumbled upon your video -which is informative and great! - as not only I also have the same edition [blue-blue!] as you but it even features the dust jacket with no price tag. So, I thought I'd share about the Viking logo's strange color change and of course the theory I have about the title color changes. Have a great time reading, collecting and being really educative! B cool,

I purchased my copy as new upon release. It’s a first edition. Different Seasons is stamped in gold/copper on the spine. I would venture to say the blue titled firsts are first edition, second printing.

These topics I always find interesting. I’ve been a collector of King since 1981 when at 13 years old I read a paperback of The Shining. I’ve subscribed to your channel. I pulled my first edition off the shelf and low and behold I had stuck a letter from an antiquarian bookseller sent to me in 1990 regarding a question I had posed to him. I am wrong in my assumption that the blue foil titles could be second printings. The book dealer confirmed in the letter that second printings HAVE a number line beginning with 2. However, he states in his letter that “there will be variations in some of the first printings because at least several titles were produced simultaneously on presses in different locations, due to the large, first printing runs.” He leaves off with, “ how one determines priority for this I’ll leave to others to declare”. So I think we can surmise that first editions/ first printings have no number line and could have blue or bronze gold titling on the spine. King was saturating the market in the 1980’s. So I would presume multiple printers were engaged in running off his titles. It would be interesting to learn if indeed the color variations would indicate certain printers and perhaps even countries (ie: Canadian editions).

That’s amazing provenance! Most definitive answer to the question so far! Thank you so much for sharing.

I came here just to find this out. I found one but on the spine, the title is gold and Viking is silver and SK on the front is gold so I was unsure if it’s a true 1st.

My gold foil copy first says printed in the United States of America on the copyright page. Set in Linotron Garamond.

In UK books they give the name of the printers, do they not do this in US editions? If so can someone with the copper coloured title confirm who the printer is so that it can be compared to the printer of the blue coloured title?

That’s a great suggestion! It does say on the copyright page it was published simultaneously in Canada, but then states it was “printed in the United States of America.” Maybe one is a Canadian edition?

I was thinking maybe the printer ran out of one ink, couldn't get it in time for the publication deadline so they got authorization to run it in the other color...to meet the deadline.

That’s the cost of a book today. Hard to tell for sure but I’d say it’s a recent edition. Thanks for asking!
