Insomnia is a great book, probably in my top 3 with IT and the Stand...would love to see this made into a movie. It always saddens me when I see a top 10 best Stephen King books that Insomnia is usually not in anyone's list :(

As an avid King fan, having read all his books (most more than once) except for the last few most recent, Insomnia is not only my favorite book of his, but my all time favorite of any books. It's not the story itself why this is, but because of the way it pulled at my mind, at the believable possibility of how there is so much we can't see, either shut out because of physical limitations, or mental ones. I love a good story, and the plot is "okay", as everything seems to be good he writes, but it's the ideas and vision that make this my favorite.

read this while in high school, I found it resonated very strongly with me at the time. Since then I've re-read through a few times to better absorb some subtleties I may have been oblivious to as a teen. Absolutely one of my favorite books.

People who didn't like "Insomnia" have never suffered from insomnia.... the fucked up shit that runs through ones mind after a week or so of little to no sleep... this book nailed it.

Great review. I've just finished the book, and agree with majority of points you've mentioned. My only drawback would be it lacked clear contextualization, so I had to work to fill in the blanks in full set the scene. So I wouldn't really class the book as an easy read, but enjoyable non the less.

I read this book years before getting around to The Dark Tower. It's one of my favourite books and have read it many times. The Derry of the Old Crocks, as apposed to the Derry of the kids or Derry of the down and outs.

Loved the concept of this one but definitely a bit slow to get into the action. Great setup for an intro to the series tho which I haven't read yet! My fav will always be IT I think :) and Carrie and Christine of course, classics!

Oh yeah, Insomnia is pretty heavily front-loaded with setup, but once it got going, it was hard for me to put it down. My wife, on the other hand... she can't get past, like, page 40 or so - always falls asleep... ironic, I guess.

Im glad I stumbled upon your review of this excellent Stephen King Classic. Haven't read Stephen King for at least 10 years before picking up his book on writing and the Bazar of bad dreams this christmas. Enjoyed both of them and grabbed Insomnia on audible for a "reread" because why not? One of my absolute favorite books from Stephen King. Not to mention that this book really describes how your mind can go off the rails when you have real insomnia... It's one of my favorite Stephen King books and I came to the realization after watching this review, that I haven't read the Dark Tower series... NEXT on my books to read after (RE)finishing this audiobook!

King claims he doesn't remember writing this book because of his drug and alcohol use, plus it was "overambitious." I hated "Rose Madder," another book touching on women's rights. Still, his talent, and as always, his ability to flesh out characters, is amazing here. Howevet, I could never "get into" our three little bald doctors. I understand the connection to Greek mythology (also touched on in the awful "Rose Madder," but being familiar with the Visitor Phenomenon, through years of following Whitley Street and his late wife Anne, I was hoping there would be some explanation for the physical resemblance. However, ever-prescient King scared me when I re-read "Insomnia" and trotted out the Green Man, a benevolent but complex entity first encountered by Anne Srieber YEARS LATER in real life!

yes! I am just completing A New World by W. Steiber. There are striking similarities between the Kobalds described and the little bald doctors (Clotho Lachesis and Atropos) from Stephen Kings Insomnia. Also how Stephen king describes the multiple layers of reality that we are unable to recognize with our five senses. Spooky.

@@nathanbeer3338 There were several books he wrote while high, but the most notorious was "Tommyknockers," which he barely remembers composing, and the novel he dislikes the most. His favorite is "Lisey's Story," sometimes, but it's too drawn out for me. I think he likes it because it's a love letter to Tabby.

It took you a while to reread the series. While in collage, I used the computer labs at the end of the day. When my work was done, I would play game on line. There was a mudd game, that was hard to get on. I made an ugly character, and got on the this mudd. After midnight, when my school work was done, I would play around in a fantasy world. One day this Character should up, and his name was Randal Flagg. Flagg acted nice, but everyone beat the crap out of him, and Flagg would freck out. "I'll kill you all. " this Flagg Character would say. I asked the guy who ran the mudd, "Why did you get rid of this boob?" He said, "I didn't even let this Randal Flagg in the game. He was just there one day." Can we access the multiverse through a online game?

You know even though after watching this vid entirely and now basically knowing the entire plot, I still think I'm gonna read this one on my way to the Tower (I'm reading Eyes of the Dragon right now and it's so terrible!!!). You know other than Needful Things I have never read a single one of King's works since he turned sober, so that will be interesting for me. It sounds like a good one and especially since I am such an insane fan of IT. Here's hoping it's any good, thanks as always for the reviews I hope you keep making them.

I feel like I'm on an acid trip watching your video since everything is shifting and moving. It's making me dizzy! I'm glad to see that you look at the camera in your current reviews. It's annoying when people look off to the side like you do in this video. It's like you're talking to someone else, since you're not making eye contact with me. Congrats on remembering the names! Those were some hard names to remember! The Audible is 25 hours 39 minutes. I tend to read faster 3 times faster than narrators, so it would probably take me 8 hours to read. I too am prepping to read The Dark Tower series for the first time. Other books to prep with are The Stand, It, 'Salem's Lot and Hearts in Atlantis, or so I'm told. I'm wondering if this concept of seeing a hidden world inspired the 2012 movie named Branded.
