i jus finished Salems Lot today and it was amazing. My rating is out of 10 stars and this one is a solid 10 out of 10. great book. i usualy love vampire stories and this is defenitely a good vampire read. The ending was brilliant. next book i going to read is The Stand. its gonna be a long and hopefully fun Journey. i did read Salems Lot for the same reason i'm going to read The Stand, wich is that it have something to do with The Dark Tower. in Salems Lot its Character Father Callahan, and in The Stand, its Randall Flagg. i'm looking forward to it. They got in The Stand Universe in Wizard and Glass. but The Stand is a long book so i think safely : roughly two months of reading i guess. at the very least. after the stand i'm reading a shorter book wich is Eyes of the Dragon and after that i'm looking forward for my third time Dark Tower Journey. cant wait already.

Whilst I used to love this book (I still think it is one of the best vampire novels ever written) after repeated readings a couple of things stand out to me. The biggest problem I have is that I nearly find myself rooting for the vampires because most of the towns folk are assholes. With the exception of Mark and Matt Burke the other characters are all pretty cold and lacking in any real warmth. Even Ben isn't the most likable character. He's quite brooding and dark (because of the loss of his wife.) I would argue that this is because of the decade this was written in. There is a huge amount of bitter 70s cynicism running through the whole book. Consequently, I find more and more it lacks any real warmth which is so important to any good horror. That again probably adds to my reason as to why I don't much care that the town gets taken over. I also think that cynicism and feeling that King depicts of the town has meant it hasn't aged too well. My other issue is that it needed another good confrontation scene. It could have done with Ben and Matt doing battle with one or more vampires in the graveyard. The scene with Matt and Mike in Matt's bedroom is fine, but it's too quick and then one of the main characters gets sidelined. Overall, I now give this book a 7, possibly 7.5 out of 10.

Took me a while to get into the book. I started it just after The Stand and thought it was a really slow book. Didn't really care about Ben at all either. The deeper I got into the book I really did start to enjoy it and loved it coming towards the end. Also the little boy Mark was a fantastic character. Probably my favourite and was really rooting for him throughout. 4/5 for me but still really enjoyed book.

I love the book just about as much. Fantastic in almost every way. The only thing that was a black mark is stupid choices and decisions by characters. Susan goes by herself up to the house to take on a vampire BY HERSELF!!!??? Are you kidding me? Then Ben goes to take on some vampires and gets most of the way there and says to himself “whoops, I forgot my crucifix”. WTF???? However, everything else is great. Tight, fast paced, atmospheric, descriptive language worthy of Nabokov or Styron

I honestly found this one to be boring, even though I love character development and vampires being deadly creatures instead of somebody's love interest, it just didn't do it for me. There was a little creepy atmosphere but just not enough to really keep me enthralled and one scene that's always stuck with me just felt like a soap opera version of how a person would behave in the same scenario.

Personally I’m not a huge fan of this book. I found that there was a lot of backstory for all of the townsfolk that just ended up dead. He also dived so deep into the story of the Marsten House when in the end it didn’t matter in the slightest.

It’s a good point, even after the Marsten house was shut down by father Callahan, King still describes it as menacing and over the town. And yes when reading the backstories for all these characters I was expecting them all to get together or at least do something more than simply be described dying. And also some characters were just left and never described again, such as Tony Glick and Bill Norton, which felt a little wasted to me. I also wish Mabel Werts was actually in a scene, described so many times but just ends up another name who’s slain

I listened to the Prologue and was confused. Ben and the boy have to travel back to Salem's Lot to finish some Mysterious business. Then, There's the unannounced Flashback where Ben is driving to Salem's Lot by himself. And I'm like, where's the boy? Was he left on the West Coast? And why is the tone of the book less depressing/ menacing? I passed my turn twice and had to call my buddy up to see what's going on!

I find that so very interesting that your history and infatuation with Salem's Lot so very much parallels my own with IT. In the sense that I actually loved the TV mini series of IT so much in fact that just like you with Salem's Lot, soon after I just had to read the entire novel I just had to read IT. Now, interestingly enough I know that you downright hate the IT TV mini series, but perhaps if you had in fact Read Salem's Lot first and then you experienced the TV mini series of the same name you would not be nearly as crazy about it as you are now, and perhaps if I had in fact read IT first and then saw the TV mini series soon after...I would look at it with unwavering eyes as well, but where as it stands now, I love the TV mini series IT, "Do you want a balloon?". It's just funny how these things work out sometimes don't you think? Anyhow I just recently read Salem's Lot for the very first time actually, and I was genuinely surprised how much I truly loved it. I would describe the whole thing as feeling as if I am getting hypnotized by an actual real life vampire with every page. This book really feels to hypnotize you, plus I love that in a lot of ways this book also feels like a practice run for what would one day become IT, and Needful Things. I can definably see elements in Salem's Lot that would one day become these two future works by King, "He thrust his fists against the post and still insists he sees a ghost", not to mention for a little kid Mark Petrie is a badass. Ok so finally one quick question....have you ever read Vampire Hunter D? The novel mind you not the two anime movies? I would love love love your thoughts on that one some day., that is actually one of my favorite vampire novels. I changed my mind, two questions actually, I'm next reading Eyes of the Dragon, before I begin to hit the Tower, any thoughts? Thanks as always for the great reviews, I look forward to more.

After reading the book I found both movie adaptations (1979 and 2004) to be a big disappointment. The 2004 version was an improvement over the 1979 film but neither was a very accurate duplication of the novel. If another movie adaptation of Salem's Lot is made with a substantial budget and is faithful to every major part of the novel, it could be one of the greatest horror films ever made.

just read it, it's a slow burn the first 4 chapters were boring to me, but it picked up pace quickly after that ,the story itself feels a bit filled with unimportant stuff and turns out very simple with big spotlights on a few moments, my favorite moment is when he talks randomly about the townspeople and their sins, I love how he describes vampire's stares and smiles, the main character is WEAK, i love jim and mike ,even the main girl were more interesting than ben, the ending is very unsatisfying and unlikely, I rather make the fire happen there than in the past but it was good I would rate it 6.5 out of 10 edit: I didn't mention it but after reading The Stand, I got tired of Stephen King misogyny, women are tools and always get fucked plus beaten in most of his works I find it disgusting

Do you think that is the mistake Stephen King made, in the book, making Barlow a charismatic, 'ordinary' looking man, instead of the Nosferatu look, which I think is better. When I saw the 2004 version of the movie, I thought 'oh no, they've made Barlow different', when in fact it was the 1979 version that made Barlow different and the 2004 version was more honest to the book description.

I think you didn't like Carrie because it is a coming of age female story. Periods might not do much for a dude. Where Salem's Lot is more of a coming of age male story. I didn't like it as much as Carrie. I loved Dracula, but I found this book didn't resound the awesomeness of the original Dracula story. I think I would have liked it more if he used journals, newspaper stories and letters like the original book uses.

First I want to say that I really don't want to be this guy, but I will be. 1st, Blaze (Bachman book) was the first book he ever wrote. 2nd, You may or may not know this, but since you seem to be such an avid fan of S. King I don't think you do know this. (Like you, I used to be ALL King ALL the time, then I read Danse Macabre, where in he confesses to simply 'rewriting' S. Jackson's Hell House, and Dracula, and even confessed when that as he was growing up he used to watch a TV show called 'One Step Beyond' in the 1950s. Of course this was before there was a SCI-FI channel--which would years later broadcast One Step Beyond--and it was while watching that, that I discovered the episode about a girl who set things on fire with Carrie/Charley McGee-like powers. It was then that. In Danse Macabre, King confessed that he had been working on a novel about the Patty Hearst kidnapping when he read a book called 'The Earth Abides', and upon finishing it he said to himself, 'too much ecology, not enough story', and at that point the kidnapping story was put aside and he just 'ripped off' the Earth Abides and transformed it into the Stand.) That being said, I still love 'Salem's Lot, and Fire Starter (like you I don't like the book version of Carrie). and most of his work until he was hit by the car. His work after that became self-indulgent and lazy. Now, for the thing that I think you must know but may not. Like King 'ripping off' older works, to get his start Robert McCammon got his start 'ripping off' the works of S. King. His book Swan Song is the Stand (only much better), his book 'Night Boat' is Christine (only with a submarine), and 'They Thirst' is his version of 'Salem's Lot (again, done with a much more complex plot). So, if by chance you have not read They Thirst, and as you say you love a good vampire yarn, try it. The same goes for Swan Song. Go for it.
@WilAdams
5 жыл бұрын
Mmm. This review is really more of a recap of the book. There is nothing here where the writing is praised. King's use of prose in this book is perhaps the best he will have until he starts The Shining. That is not to say books like Firestarter, The Stand, and Dead Zone are not well written, they are, but in this book, King actually makes the town a character. The buildings are filled with secrets that the read is told about, but which the characters in the book do not share. The part that has stuck with me through the years is a scene in which Susan is on her way to the Marsden House. Along the way, she takes of a snow fence stake--she only 1/2 believes there is a vampire there, so just in case. A bit further along, as she starts down the stairs to the basement Susan thinks, 'If I were watching this in a movie, I would be screaming you stupid bitch don't go down there.' I will point out that Robert MCCammon started his career writing what I call 'rip-offs' of Stephen King books, and his 'rip-off' of this book is called, 'They Thirst', and it is actually as good as Salem's Lot. The differences in the two books are vast, just as were the differences between King's The Stand, and McCammon's 'Swan Song', but as with Swan Song, McCammon's stories are classic, and in the case of They Thirst, scary. Of course, the scariest story I ever read, is Orson Scott Card's novella (only available in his hardcover book 'Maps in a Mirror'), and not the novelization, called, LOST BOYS. White Knuckle reading for sure.

If what you say about Steven King and Tabitha is correct with regards to concept, he obviously didn't see "The Return of Dracula" with Francis Lederer. It is a low-budget classic and worth checking out. Find it on KZitem. Vampires came to California before they came to Maine. Lederer's depiction of the count is more believable than Barlow and spares you the histrionic ham.

This book you were reviewing is not the original one, I have read this book but a newer version of and it really worthed my time. It is also my first Steven King's book I have read. The book I've read actually came with a prequel and a sequel story from wich I loved the prequel one as it gave a back story of how all that vampire thing became, where did it start from. Lastly it also has deleted scenes from the original book in which many things were deleted or written in a different way. One example which i liked the most is that Father Khalahan actually didn't make it out alive, instead he killed himself with a knife so as not to give Barlow (Sarlinof in the original form) the joy of winning. Nice review!

Love you reviews. You're my go to King info source. But a question on Salem's Lot regarding page count. You said that paperback was about 400 pages, but the copy I got from the library was almost 700. I know there is an expanded version but I didn't see anything on the cover. Any assistance is clearing my confusion?

Forrest Acrey Not 100 percent sure but I know Cemetery Dance out a special edition with extra materials, both of the short stories based on a Salem’s Lot, and a few other extras. Perhaps that is the edition our library has. It clocks in around 660 pages.

@@FrostyKnives I don't think it had any additional short stories, just the novel. As far as the page count goes, chalk it up to adjusted margins or some nonsense.
