I'm watching a bunch of reviews of this since I just finished it and I'm surprised to see so many negative opinions of it. I thought it was a concise thriller that never let up. The whole last act on the plane was nerve-wracking in my opinion

I liked it a lot more the first time I read it, but visiting it again it just didn't hit the mark for me. There are some good parts for sure and it's pretty fun, but I think it would comfortably be towards the bottom of the list if you ranked all King's work together. Glad you liked it though, and thanks for commenting!

Love this book, and I shudder through the last few chapters. I think it's great and crazily prophetic. The movie is great, in its sheer cheese factor, but I prefer the book for the last moments alone. I'll say I completely disagree when it comes to the chapters, as they tick down faster and faster, I always get chills. Thanks for the review!

Listening to the audiobook over the last couple days, I have to disagree with you - I really don't think the Network had the Richardses killed. It would've been way, way too obvious a strategy that might not have been worth it anyway had Ben died any sooner during the hunt, and had he gone on to accept the job offer, it would've been incredibly easy for him to verify the story with the power of the Hunters behind him. Ben himself remarks on this shortly after the offer is made. His family being randomly killed by burglars during the short interim between Ben being accepted and his name being publicly announced is a little convenient, but more believable, I think.

This is a fair point - it’s been a while since I read this one now so my memory of it is a little hazy. Although, my gut is still saying that the Network did it…but that could just be me!

I am yet to finish this book, I’m like halfway through, but I have a question. When Richards meets the boy with his dog, the boy mentions Derry. But I’m a bit confused why Stephen King would put in a reference to Derry since he released the book under his pseudonym Bachman, wouldn’t this reference give it away that it was actually King who wrote the book?
@DaveReadsKing
Жыл бұрын
Good question. Bachman often threw in a few King references - The Long Walk is basically all in Maine and in Thinner there’s even a direct Stephen King name check…I reckon he was probably just being a bit cheeky and messing with us all!

I read this first back in the late 80s and have read it many times since. I thought the ending was EXCELLENT and always felt slightly guilty for the 9/11 style take out but it gets my blood pumping every time. Has anyone ever heard Al Stewart's Song Running Man which came out the same year this was written and thought that maybe King "Borrowed" some ideas?

I actually believed Killian when he offered his explaination as to how Richards wife and daughter were killed. It really was just an angry, reactionary mob of brainwashed hooligans. Killian's *grimace* response when Ben asked him how his daughter was killed says it all. Killian is a monster, sure, but in this one instance I feel that we the reader are to find him truthful based on his disgusted reaction to Ben's question.
