Love the back and forth of the discussion! Regarding Russ' point on how deeper questions (if/who you should marry, moral values, etc) are not like tech/matter where the path forward is always obvious.. it reminds me of Swami Sarvapriyananda April 10th lecture (50m mark), where he talks about how there exists many paths to enlightenment, thousands of years of old.. so if it was just a matter of time, you would think humans would have ended suffering long ago. Perhaps it's like AI, and autonomous driving, where the rate of improvement seems huge in the beginning, but over time it plateaus, and don't get any closer.. or worse yet, go around in circles!

37:37 "...it's just wrong..." I'm sorry but that just doesn't cut it. I thought it was well established, that a cost-benefit-analysis is exactly what is happening most of the time and ethical considerations are very low on the list. And no, we obviously don't understand that that's despicable, because how else can you possibly explain the vast numbers of bad actors? It seems it has become completely normal to be incosiderate and to go through miles of moral chasms just to possibly climb a slightly larger hill in the distance, which you're not even guaranteed to get to.

A subject suggestion is the emptying of our nations school teachers. High school, middle school range. I was just emailed by my coworkers begging (basically), via a forwarded email from my community (schools begging), asking for anyone to volunteer as science teachers. I'm in a red, GOP state and I've watched in horror as law after law is aimed at destroying science in schools, scaring away democratic scientific teaching (and teachers), increasing religious school vouchers (which take my public levee tax money), and I've observed a hundred more disturbing experiences of violence or threats of it from the religious against the scientific method... anyway. I thought the same. Seems like there was only reasoning on one direction.
@Michael-kp4bd
Жыл бұрын
@@ergocaustic3473 Fair to challenge that as a follow up (yet I think that consideration is intrinsically accounted for in the discussion, just less opined on) but the “critique” is completely sound. I think calling it a critique is even a misinterpretation of this discussion. Darwin made a list that was “one directional”. Because its attempted objectivity in cost-benefit analysis lacked the unknown benefits of what he would become as a married man. And yet Darwin made the “ *irrational* choice” according to *his* *own* model of happiness - which is interesting, and the most meaningful part of that anecdote and largely focus of their discussion. It’s not like they’re saying Darwin was wrong. Or necessarily that he’s right. But that on his own accord he must’ve felt that his model wasn’t good enough, because in the end he made the opposite decision. Also, sorry to seem obtuse, but you do know that Sam and Russ have lived experience of *not being married*. Of course there’s a continued path that plays out differently if you stay single, but your critique hinges on the idea that Sam and Russ are equally “in the dark” about not being married as Darwin was about considering getting married. The information for cost-benefit analysis that you have is extremely lop sided towards the “knowns” of not being married. The information you lack, the details for which you are extremely more “in the dark” about, as a single person, is: what it’s like to live a married life.
@ergocaustic3473
Жыл бұрын
@@Michael-kp4bd The way I understood Mr. Roberts' reasoning is that -and let's use the marriage example- no cost-benefit is useful as we cannot really well calculate the "unknown". Which is of course in some sense correct, but I don't think that's a fortunate way to approach any decision making process. Not for everyone is a good choice to get married. As not for everyone is a good choice to do standup comedy. Or to open a restaurant. The list is endless. "Just do it, because maybe you'll like it or get to like it" is not really a constructive advice, I think.
