I upgraded to a lithium 135 amp battery; same size but less weight than 100 amp AGM it replaced. I rarely fall to 50% and recharge asap. It is now 4 years old and working great especially off grid.

It's good to know that we're not alone in singing the praises of lithium batteries in motorhomes, caravans and boats. If there's anyone who really knows their stuff when it comes to batteries, it's Charles Sterling. And, when he tells you something, you'd be well advised to sit up and take notice. Charles doesn't mess around: he tells it like it is.

Very interesting. But as you mentioned it is an extreme test. There is no doubt lithium is the way forward. Have you any idea with noraml caravan and inverter usage what the life time would be of a lithium battetry

What's normal Mike? I've been using (heavily) lithium batteries for 5 years and RoadPro has installed hundreds in that period of time. We've never known one fail. But there are lithium batteries that don't work well with inverters and, for various reasons, we would not recommend them. We say that the batteries we sell - and have some knowledge of - should be good for 2,500 - 5,000 cycles depending on the type and how they're used: that equates to over 20 years of use for some people and 10 for others.

Very interesting. I have a 125AH Lead Acid Leisure Battery. The starter Battery & Leisure Battery are charged from a 210 watt Solar Panel array & a split charge system. I do not use an inverter. I run a 12v compressor fridge, a Propex 2000 Heater use LED lights & charge phones, tablets, computers batteries etc. In winter I occasionally use my Honda EU 10i generator to top up the Leisure Battery during the short days. I always wild camp so never plug in to shore power when away. I record solar input & Battery voltages daily. I record the voltages early in the morning before loading them. My Leisure Battery has never been lower than 12 volts. I think it cost me £130? So I can replace my battery 8 times for the cost of a Lithium one. So between 16 & 24 years? I will be dead in 24 years but might be around in 16 years but possibly not in my van. Just a few figures I have been playing with & have not drawn any conclusion other than it pays to look after your batteries whatever type you own & buy the best of type you can afford.

You are absolutely correct about looking after your batteries but, please be aware that, when a 12V battery is actually reading 12V, technically, it's dead!

RoadPro It must of been dead for 2.5 years then! Every source I have read leads me to understand that 12v is around 50% discharged, the minimum to run conventional batteries down to without damaging them. Are you seriously saying that 12 volts is a dead battery? In my experience that is not, in practical terms the reality. The battery charged normally & holds it’s charge. I run my Fridge 24/7 for the last 3 months (I am a photographer who travels a lot) without any issues & I charge lot’s of batteries, speakers, iPads etc every day all off grid. It would seem my battery is still ok?

OK, not completely dead, I agree. But getting there.

You wouldnt use a lead acid like its lithium in this way. Fairer test would be to run a 100AH lead acid discharged to 50% and a 50AH lithium battery discharged 100%. Then you'd be discharging both by 50AH, the lithium 50AH would cost at least double the price and the charge cycle life on the lead acid, particularly a deep cycle would last for much much more than your graph showed. Lithium is still a good shout, but buyers should question whether its better to buy a cheap AGM battery and upgrade in 2 or 3 years when better/cheaper technogology is out, or spend big money now on lithium even though the price will ontiue to drop into the future.

Lots of batteries used like this. Lithium is the only sensible choice.

I’ve often wondered if being on hookup with the battery getting a charge all the time is bad?

Good question Darren and the answer is: whatever type of battery you have, as long as the charger is suitable for the battery, nothing bad should happen.

You should be ashamed of yourself. Love your batteries.
