What you report is absolutely correct: I bought my own Stingray short scale yesterday and the first thing I did was sand the neck a bit with 600 grit sandpaper, and dress the fret ends. Apart from that it's playing great, very nice instrument.

I have the Sterling Short Scale and three other Ernie ball Stingray basses. It’s definitely a keeper and fun bass to play. I agree the neck does require light sanding and fret ends smoothed out which takes only a few minutes. Once done you’ll love it too. Don’t pass this one up, for the price it doesn’t get much better.

It’s like 599.00 though. I’m new to bass and definitely have small hands and although this is by far the best sounding short scale I’ve researched, I had to go with the Yamaha Broad Bass 234 for 309.00. The Yamaha blew away all of the Squire stuff I looked at. I played bass briefly in 2017 and owned a vintage modified jazz base from squire and the quality was excellent but the new stuff is way worse.

Thank you for your honest review. I'd been wondering about the neck on this short-scale bass, because I once had a 5-string Sterling Ray 5 (the lowest--priced option) with a neck that felt completely unfinished. I just didn't like the feel of that, and it sounds like this neck is finished the same way. I'm glad that the sandpaper helped it.

Thanks for the tip on the winding for the G string. I'm about to re-string my guitar with an ADGC tuning. You've helped me avoid some string buzz headache.

The volume boost is best used when you have it in single coil or parallel mode. It then boost the signal to match the series output level. So your sound person doesn’t freak out when switch on stage.

Great review. Not sure why they've cut the corners on the small things, but yet have a really decent playing instrument overall. Much appreciated.

Great Video man. Do you think it would be a cool mod to throw a Music Man Humbucker pick up like this on a Fender Bronco? Would love your thoughts.

Hmm, in a Bronco, or even in one of the Squier Mustangs. It would be interesting.

How much do these Sterling Stingray Short Scales typically weight? Info I searched on the internet was all over the place and not very clear.

I've got a push-push pot on my EBMM Luke III for its active boost. I've been mashing on it for about 8 years now. No problems other than occasional scratchiness if I don't use it for a while - no different than my other guitars pots and switches. Quick shot of De-Oxit and all's well again.

Nice video thank you! I’ve just done my own review, and I found exactly the same problems that you did, very rough frets and dusty feeling neck. But I love how it sounds and I love our place the Fred. The fret level crowning are fantastic, but final sanding and polish just was not done at all.

They definitely have quality control issues. I’ve played 3 of them, returned one and own one. Two of them were sunburst, and I found that I couldn’t get either of those to not be extremely bass-heavy no matter what I did with the pots, in addition to having some non-fret-related buzzing that I could not figure out. The blue one I tried(which I just bought) is much better, but still I found a buzzing on the d string that I believe is due to the fact that the screws in the d string saddle are upside down. Not sure how that happened, but it definitely seems like their people are trying to get them off the line quickly and aren’t too concerned with mistakes. One other thing I’ve seen with all of them is slits by every fret on the side of the neck. Not sure if they slid them in or something. On the sunburst that I returned they were just open slits. At least on the one I kept they filled the slits in.

Hello, do you know if the dimensions of the body are the same as the full scale one? or being a short scale the body is a little smaller?

it's proportionately smaller. Not by a lot, but certainly noticeable.

Did you ever switch out the pickup? Thanks
@guitarguts5530
Жыл бұрын
No, the pickup is still sitting in the box. the switch is very convoluted inside, and I have never found a definite wiring schematic that lets me know which wire is doing what. The contacts on the switch look delicate as well, so I don't want to risk damaging it by having to swap things around continually.

Lobster mentioned that in his review. Apparently it's a touch neck divey if you're sitting down but standing with a strap it doesn't matter much.
