I have experienced Steve Coleman as a visionary and uncannily talented musician. I've owned many of his recordings and have enjoyed his working with many great artists and their working with him. Steve's music is an acquired taste. I became open to it through being a young musician (years ago) and being open to the new things being done in modern music, such as jazz-fusion. I was very attracted to what seemed to be a hyper intellectualizing of the basic elements of music, particularly as they related to the American experience of descendants of enslaved Africans and their future outlook. Where I depart from Steve's musical vision is where it seems he departs from almost any reference to European derived melody and harmony. I have my theories as to why he may have done this, but I feel he may have shortchanged his service to the musical world by perhaps throwing out the baby with the dirty bathwater. Just my musical opinion. He has the same right to his.
