Steve extra cool on the introduction. Slumped, smoking, not sweating anything. American cool personified.

12:15 very interesting insight into Steve Gadd transitioning in life... he's consciously moving away from the 15 hours a day session work that was taking a real toll on him physically and mentally. By '85 he had a couple kids yet he was still doing drugs at a crazy rate, and you can tell he's worn out and realizes his work and drug habits needed to change. Good for him that he made the right decisions.

So Great !!! Does anyone know what kind of ride cymbal he is playing here ???

I’m curious about that to Dieter. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a prototype ride or even a crash. In the slow song I noticed a small piece of white tape on the backside of that cymbal and I might noticed a crack on top along with the lathing direction. Maybe it’s an 18” cymbal or a 20” cymbal or even the old K ride that Steve used for a long time (check out the Grover Washington Jr. Live Concert where all his cymbals are cracked and Steve’s hi hat cymbal misses pieces of metal. Steve could have it cut down to size? The ride cymbal that he’s using here has a very dry and trashy sound which I like very much. I guess it’s thin and I recognise the sound in a 22” Istanbul Agop Signature ride cymbal that I heard and in this 19” cymbal: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1Id-0JangaCcp4o The Istanbul Agop Signature series sounds old K Istanbul alike. If you like to know how Steve’s 18” EAK prototype ride(s) were made than you can check my EAK Island video that I recently posted on KZitem. If you like to leave a comment on that video than please do. Thanks.

I purchased a zildjian K custom Steve Gadd session 18" ride around 12 years ago. It's not what he is using here but it was developed in conjunction with Steve Gadd in 2004 to replicate the sound he was getting back in the day out of the K's. The 18'' is discontinued now (as of 2017) but zildjian seems to have a 20" version in their lineup now. At a guess, the 20" would be a little bit brighter than the 18''. I haven't played in a while so I don't remember all of its characteristics but I know I love that ride... Very versatile.
