His core skills are still devastating!! For anyone that doesn't consider stick control or rudiments, respectfully I say think again!!God bless you Steve gadd and thank you for all the years of the great music and the great drumming that went with it!!

I’m honestly a little stunned and delighted. Steve’s been a hero of mine since I started playing drums as a teen back on the 90’s. I’ve seen so many of his performances, blown away by so many - but lately, as great as his playing been, his solos have seemed to tread on the same waters - not nearly as inventive as they used to be. This one harkens back to his 70’s and 80’s work. Inventive, musical and powerful. All the touring he’s been doing these past few years must’ve really opened him. This is amazing

The influence of his drum corps drumming comes out in this solo more than in any other one I've seen maybe other than his use of Crazy Army now and then. Honored to say that I was once guided by the legendary late Mr. Bobby Thompson as was Mr. Gadd. He even still has hints of the Thompson and Les Parks "Tea Cup" left hand grip. Gotta love it!!
@47heritage
3 жыл бұрын
@@musopaul5407 Sorry my response took so long. The "Tea Cup" grip is how you hold the left hand in the traditional grip. The pinky finger is curled up to provide better stick control. The legendary rudimental drum corps players and teachers like Les Parks (Hawthorne Cabelleros) and Bobby Thompson (taught many junior drum corps lines including Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights where I learned under him and some years previous a corps in upstate NY where he taught Steve Gadd) both used it and made it very popular. Hope that helped. The ending part of Steve's solo here is pure drum corps drumming and I can easily play right along with him note for note. I assume you're a drummer?

I'd like to see some of these young superdrummers play with the swinging groove and precise, subtle intensity that Steve Gadd demonstrates here in a room where playing lightly is needed.

I think he even borrowed a piece of a Hawthorne Cabelleros drum solo from the early 60's. Nice use of flam taps and ratamacues towards the end. I really loved this solo!!!

Of course he incredible on the solos but people don't give him enough credit for how in that pocket he plays that 4/4 on this and all those other amazing tunes, still like no other, well maybe Bernard Purdie. But he is on fire here, a true of case of one getting better as one ages.

I was thinking Reilly Raiders as well but Cabelleros came to mind first. I just know I've played this exact drum corps snare solo back when I was in my teens off the Fleetwood records. I'm 74 now and a former snare drummer with 1963 to 1965 Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights. I play along note for note with Steve on this solo every time I see it!! What's your drum corps background Mathew Byerts?
