if there was one mistake in that entire piece, I couldn't find it. Within the structure of that song is so much improvising but it is so damn tight that you would never know it. For example, coming out of Steve Gadd's drum solo, the cue was so damn hidden that one has to ask, how did they know to go into that intricate figure together at exactly the same time. Masters every single one.

Thanks! On your comment about influences: I agree. If I may add - I think Dennis Chambers is also in the list in terms of influence on music today. I think his (and Billy Cobham's for that matter) contribution is in introducing "exposiveness". You can see his style sift into the playing of the current top young drummers (of which Ronald Bruner Jr. is my favourite). But anyway - everyone is special. We are mature enough to not get into good, better, best. Cheers!

With drumming there is technique (chops) and then there is the ability to be musical and appropriate to the genre of music you are playing. Gadd excels at this. There is a story about the make of this album. It is said that Chick did not have a drum score for Gadd.........so he said, no problem, make me a copy of the piano score and I'll play from that. If you listen closely to the recording many of Gadd's riffs mimic the piano's left hand. The guy is brilliant, beyond belief.

Gadd ALWAYS serves the music; he has pyrotechnical skills that can blow away just about any drummer out there, but he doesnt get flashy. If there is anything close to drumming genius, it's Steve Gadd. The only other drummer I've ever heard withthis much MUSICALITY was Joe Morello.

Gadd with two flat rides ... a rare occurence indeed.
@garydonnelly100
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have to say the main ride choice left me a bit "flat" as I love his explosiveness on his 18" cracked ride, and the way he can make it sizzle and cook at lower dynamics. Flats to me are a bit one-dimensional and are fabulous as second rides, but main, not my cup 'o tea. Yeah, I know...bring on the wrath of the Roy Haynes, Marcus Gilmore and Marty Morrell fans. I own two myself... K Light Flat Ride and a K Constantinople flat...just wicked sounding cymbals but just not my choice as a main since I can't get very "rambunctious" on them. But man, Steve just plays so creatively here. Never heard a guy with such a deep bag of tricks who can use that stuff to his advantage and not like a crutch. He creates ridiculously musical solos around that vocabulary.

no, i'm not related to gadd family. i'm simply collecting over the years gadd-stuff. i think he's the biggest influence in contemporary drumming the last 30 years. vinnie colaiuta transported again drumming to another level. what he's playing is simply astonishing( jeff beck at ronnie scott's for example). although sometimes i think he's overplaying... nevertheless two really greats....

I know it is not wise to necessarily compare drummers, but for instance, I LOVE Bozzio for what he does, but it seems he is always so in search of the MUSICALITY behind the drums, tuning his drums to notes, building these massive SICK kits in order to have all those "notes" at his disposable...but...Gadd is a musical genius with just that 6 piece kit you're looking at....
