Hi Hugo! That is a great compliment coming from you. It is a shame that too many of the HOF voters are worried about the career numbers vs. peak performance to include the playoffs. Baseball is funny in that the playoffs carry very little weight vs. other sports like football, basketball and hockey. It is not easy performing on the biggest of stages and Garvey consistently excelled when the leave began changing colors. Give me the guy who hit .338 with 11 home runs in 55 playoff games vs. the stat compiler who rarely saw the post season. Not to say the latter doesn't have a place in Cooperstown, but if I want win, I will take Steve Garvey as my first baseman over most who have played the position.

Hi Terry, You know I have a huge smile in my face after watching this video. Steve Garvey is right behind Aaron and Clemente as my all-time favorite players! He is easily my favorite Dodger of all-time and someone I got to watch for his entire career. I remember as a kid watching a Dodgers/Giants game where a player by the name of Steve Garvey came off the bench to deliver a pinch hit homer! I agree with everything you said, he played such a huge role in 70’s baseball, still can’t understand why he is not in the Hall! Another thing most people don’t know about Garvey is that early on Garvey signed a 6 year $1.9M contract and half way through he was underpaid compared to other stars, he never asked to re-negotiate, in his mind the Dodger committed to him and he would honor that deal. Love that SI with Garvey on the cover, I am thinking my collection needs more Garvey! Have a great weekend!
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648

Hi Steve! I knew you would enjoy this one growing up a Dodgers fan. Garvey was "The Man" for the Dodgers from the mid 70s to the early 80s. What a great memory you have of his pinch hit home run. I think what hurts him for the HOF are his lack of career totals that many of the voters feel a 1st baseman should have. He has less than 300 home runs, just under 2600 hits, a little over 1300 RBIs and only 1134 runs. There were more voters who thought that way when he was on the ballot. He also doesn't fare well when looking at WAR and OPS+ which is more popular now. When preparing for this video, I watched and read both contemporary and current information on Garvey. I saw him interviewed in the early 80s where he talked about setting 200 hits as a goal each year and he knew that meant putting the ball in play to get it. So, he was not big on walking. That is a much different train of thought than what we see today. I liked how he approached the game. If Garvey were a football player, he would have been in the HOF because of his post season success and the numerous awards and honors. Strangely, those are not as coveted in baseball. Just ask Thurman Munson. I hope he eventually gets in through the era committee, but I am not optimistic. Thanks for sharing about how he handled his contract. It is unfortunate that the Dodgers didn't remember that in 1982 when they didn't pay him what the Padres offered, and he left. It's always good to add more Steve Garvey to your collection. lol. You have a great weekend too.

Steve Garvey? Glad you mentioned him Terry. Although I could never be mistaken as a Dodger fan, I couldn’t help but admire Garvey’s clean-cut, professional approach to the game & his significant talent & accomplishments. He always reminded me of a blacksmith coming to the plate with his physique & substantial forearms. I’m not familiar with his stats or WAR total but I’ve never understood why he didn’t get a better chance for HOF induction nor the kind of envious criticism he seemed to get from players & press alike. Today, baseball could use a few more modest, self-deprecating players like Garvey.

Hi Gary! Great description of Garvey and how he reminded you of a blacksmith. His career stats are not up to par for some to be in the HOF. He hit less than 300 home runs which is a low for a 1st baseman. He had 2,599 hits falling short of 3,000. He had just over 1300 RBIs and 1134 runs which are not overly impressive for a HOFer. His WAR is under 40 because he didn't walk a lot. However, he was a highly decorated player earning a league MVP, 2 NLCS MVPs and 2 ASG MVPs. That is very impressive. He also had six 200 hit seasons, 5 over 100 RBI seasons, 4 Gold Gloves and the consecutive game streak. I agree with you that baseball could use more guys like Garvey.

Great coverage of Garvey. I remember as a kid having a hard time not liking him but in my very youngest days as a fan I adopted the “if you’re not for me, you’re against me” mindset and he was not on the Mets. Fortunately I grew out of that and started to appreciate the skill of anyone who played and I think that eventually changed my mindset away from being such a one team guy to a more well rounded fan of the game. Really good one here Terry! Beautiful run of Garvey Topps cards! Very unfortunate with the “Grapple in the Apple”. I think for all he did in and for Baseball that Steve belongs in the HOF. So much is about HR’s with 1B. His career WAR is surprisingly low for such a long career. But since that stat really wasn’t in the conversation much until more recently it cannot capture the intangibles of how athletic he was at 1B. I’d like to pick up some of his cards sometime! Steve Garvey should be in the Hall of Fame! I owned that Sport Magazine once but the SI cover you have is one of my favorites. The interesting thing about his altercation with Don Sutton was that even though a lot of his Dodger teammates didn't like Steve Garvey, they did respect him more when he didn't back down to Sutton (of course no one liked Don Sutton either). I don't think Garvey gets the appreciation that he deserves, but we can say the same thing about some other great 70s and 80s players. The 1980 card of his is probably my favorite, but the 1972 Topps high number (or semi high?) was a very expensive card to buy as a kid. That card and the Rod Carew were the expensive 72s back then. The 1973 Wes Parker card is also one of my favorites as Steve Garvey appeared in it too. hahaha. I only have one card of his on the Padres (1983). Love your 1977 Dodgers cards. I have a poster in my card room of those four guys that was released the following season. It was a big deal back then the Dodgers had four 30 home run hitters. Quick fact you might find interesting about Dale Murphy…He’s a legend up here in the beautiful Pacific NW as he graduated from Wilson HS in Portland Oregon and some of his home runs have taken on mythical status with stories of broken windows from neighboring homes located across the street from the outfield fence! Unfortunately, he is part of a team working on getting an expansion MLB team to Salt Lake City all while an active team is also located here in Portland trying to get a team. Though I wasn’t watching baseball at the time, Garvey was also eyewitness to the Rick Monday flag incident. I heard Monday still has the flag and has been offered in excess of $1 million dollars for it but has declined each offer. Have a great weekend Terry.

Hi Chris! There is not one card in his Topps Dodger run that I dislike. I am not as fond of the Padres cards. Especially, the 86 and 87 Topps. I like his 84 Donruss. The 77 Topps is a nice looking card. The full body shot in the field is a perspective you don't see often. Especially, when you have the All Star stripe giving less room for the photo. You're right about the flag burning game. I didn't realize he owned the flag. What a piece of history! You have a great weekend too!

Garvey was a player that no matter what scenario he was in he always excelled. 10x all-star and showed up in the post-season as you mentioned. Plus a GG 1B along with playing everyday rounds out his talents. He was easily one of the best in the game during his peak.

Well said about Garvey's excellence. He didn't just participate in big moments; he created them himself. His absence from the Hall of Fame is a loss for both the institution and its visitors. Have a great weekend!

Great video as usual Mr chairman. Garvey was definitely one of the best players when you and I were growing up, I'm sure you'll agree he had a somewhat underrated career. was definitely a clean cut guy or at least that's what he portrayed..lol. of course I learned something in your video which was he was present at all those amazing baseball moments.. pretty remarkable. excellent research on your part ,presentation, narration, and of course your cards of Garvey, I could go on and on You know how I feel about your channel and you personally, Great job! health and happiness.... your friend.. Jonathan.... PS.... do you think the national in Cleveland is something you would be able to do this year?

Hi Jonathan! He became underrated overtime but when he was playing I remember him be one of the faces of the National League. The guys who love counting stats are not fond of him and neither is the sabermetrics crowd. I am fond of players who perform on the biggest stage and Garvey was one of the best ever. For some reason, baseball players who are great in the playoffs don't get the respect that players in other sports do. Thanks as always for your positive words and encouragement. I will not be in Cleveland this year. My two middle kids are active in travel baseball and softball during that time. I hope you have a great time meeting up with the KZitem community.

I couldn’t agree more with you on Garvey I’m a life long Dodger fan and all he did was drive in runs and firm the best infield for length of over 8 years that we have ever seen it was a shame to see that the Dodgers let him go he should have been a dodger his whole career but I also feel the same about Lopes and Cey thanks for a great channel

Hi Adam, thanks for the comment. Garvey was a big game player. They just don’t get the credit they deserve in baseball like other sports. There are few first baseman I would put ahead of him if I needed to win a big game. He was also consistently very good year after year and showed up everyday. His WAR does not reflect the great player he was. It’s a shame because that is a statistic that younger fans of the game place a lot of emphasis on. Yes, he should have been a career Dodger. Have a great weekend.

One of my favorite players as a kid. And yes, it might have been because of the photos on his cards. And the stats. I loved seeing 200 hits on the back of cards.

Great bio n information. Didnt realize he was at 1st base when Aaron hit his 715. Only AS to be a write in. Unfortunately he always got upstaged by Reggie Jackson. Reggie Smith was in the 67 WS with the Red Sox. Beautiful cards!!

Thank you. You're right about Reggie upstaging him. He got some revenge in 81. I heard Garvey interviewed where he said he had the mumps leading up to the All Star game but knew he had to play since he was a write in.

We've heard you mention Dave Parker, Dale Murphy and Steve Garvey before but this deep dive on specifically Garvey really captured my imagination on this player more so then ever before. The only player I remember in my young collecting days to distill an era in baseball and pop culture alike as much as Mr Garvey was probably Bo Jackson up to and including after his decline. It was about Charisma. The Major League version of Forrest Gump really cracked me up. Perhaps funny because it's true but honestly just as comical to think of Gump and his many adventures. But wow Garvey was there for alot and proved worthy on multiple occasions living up to the expectations. Six years over 200 hits? I'm surprised this isn't mentioned more often. Maybe as time passes and guys like Don Mattingly finally get their due respect by the veterans committee will Cooperstown town finally smile on Steve Garvey. But it sounds like you're good with his legacy regardless. No complaints here and ty for sharing your beautiful cards and extraordinary information and contagious nostalgia for this era. Boy I'm sure glad the brawl w Don Sutton was broken up. Otherwise, who knows?

Avian, good point about Bo Jackson delivering charisma much like Garvey. When Bo was on the field whether it was football or baseball, you couldn't take your eyes off of him. Yeah, Garvey captured some historical moments. It doesn't get much bigger than breaking the home run record which was the most storied in sports and then the hits record. Reggie's three home runs in game 6 of the World Series is about as big as it gets. Yes, Avian, the HOF won't change my opinion of Garvey, but it would be nice for him and his family to see him inducted. He was a giant of his era and that is what the HOF is made for. I don't care he didn't get the big career numbers. The HOF is a better place with Garvey, Mattingly, Munson, Dick Allen and others who were clearly the big stars of the game. I always appreciate your kindness. Take care!

When you mentioned that Garvey had 33 homers, I had to go look to see if changing his approach effected his BA. It doesn't appear that it did or at least...not much. When I was a kid, I thought he had the biggest forearms ever made. Can I assume you would give him a vote for the HOF? He still has great hair. Not fair. lol Have a good weekend.

Hi Drew, when I prepared for this video, I watched and read both contemporary and recent information. Garvey talked about that season in a video from the early 80s. You’re right it wasn’t any big adjustments other than moving his hands back. At least that is how he explained it. His average did drop some and he just missed getting 200 hits. Presumably because he was hitting for more power. He does have great hair. You have a great weekend too.

nice 1979 Dave Parker , 1977 Reggie Smith , 1985 Pete Rose ,, 1981 Dale Murphy, 1980 Steve Garvey? nice 1985 in a Padres? nice 1974 of Garvey nice Homerun king card., nice 1977 of Mr. October , and Steve Garvey, nice 1971 , 1972 and 1973!!! I see the Houston Astro's former Mgr. Dusty Baker , Reggie Smith , and Ron Cey, , nice 1978 of Garvey and Don Sutton , nice 1975 and 1976 of Steve Garvey, , nice 1979 ,, 1980 , nice 1981 , 1982 and 1983 of Steve Garvey , nice 1983 , nice 1983 traded , 1984 and 1985 of Steve Garvey , sometimes a player can be on the field, the court and the Ice for big events on the other end doesn't mean there great it just means they played with a good team , or a team from a big city say La for example, Chicago ect. but yeah Steve Garvey was a great first baseman he's popular he's not a common like Barry Bonell , Dave Duncan, Cliff Johnson ect he's also not a hall of famer like Rod Carew , Johnny Bench, Mr. October but he's a popular player like the real Ken Griffey, Dwight Evens , Dave Kingman and Rusty Staub Steve Garvey was a great first basemen I have no interest in what the Hall has to say. he played in real world serises ? what did you think about Keith Hernandez? this goes with about 54 seconds into your video say .52 to .54 seconds so for the national league would you say Reggie smith is a homerun hitter with a low average like Graig Nettles, Cecil Cooper and Ken Singleton? or a known player like Willie Randolph , Mickey Rivers, Jerry Remmy ect?

Hi Mark! I figured those 70s and early 80s cards would connect with you. You're right it doesn't matter if Garvey gets in the HOF from the standpoint of what I think of him. I would like to see him get in because he deserves it. I like Keith Hernandez but didn't give him a lot of thought when I first started watching baseball. He was a very good player though. Reggie Smith was a much better average hitter than Nettles and had more power than Cooper and Singleton. I think he does compare better to the latter two than Nettles though. Injuries impacted his career. ' Take care''
