Steve always played exactly what was required for Genesis songs in the day. Along with Gilmour his sound is sublime and beyond perfection. There is only one Steve Hackett!

People forget to give Phil Collins credit here. It was Collins that suggested that Hackett take a shot (and a variation) on Gabriel's flute solo from earlier in FO5. Collins was Genesis' arranger from pretty much the day he walked in the door. He didn't write until much later, but he was hugely responsible for the music we heard. Genesis' greatest work during its quartet period really was rooted in Hackett's ideas and Collins' arrangements. Consider that Rutherford now thinks that "Blood On The Rooftops" was the highlight of W&W.

All true :) But let's not forget that Tony actually wrote the melody... No doubt though; what Steve did with it is sublime and only the four of them combined could have made TotT and W&W. They were so much more together than the sum of their parts. Steve leaving had, to my mind, a far greater detrimental effect on the band than when Peter jumped ship. Having read Mike & Phil's auobiogs and Pete's 'authorized' bio, I can't wait for Steve's, hopefully this summer CV19 permitting... Wonder if Tony will ever write one... ;)

My favorite guitarist of all time. He never plays too much or flash; he plays just enough where you can't remove one note. If Tony would've gave up a little solo time, they might've stayed together a bit longer and played less crap, once he left.

The first time - and every time since - I heard the Firth of Fifth solo on Seconds Out, the hair stood on the back of my neck and it sent chills through my spine. There is a very similar solo by Kerry Livgren on his solo album 'Seeds of Change" on a song entitled, Waiting for Ground Zero. Neither solo is a machine gun style - hey look at at fast I can play guitar - type solo - they both have great sound, great soul, and lots of depth that grabs you emotionally.
