One of the great all time masterpieces (The Ancient). Lost on many of today's short concentration- span music listeners. In recent times many have said that when 'punk' came along- it blew away the arty-farty prog. Actually no. It is a different music genre, and a matter of taste. I see few punk musicians being re-played now, but this is being appreciated for it's musical skill. (Steve Howe and Steve Hackett etc.)

+Richard James Tales, is my favorite Yes album. I still have the album, but I once loaned it to a friend to be processed thru his record mangling hands. Now it is akin to that piece of rock candy on The Outlaw Josey Wells. It's just for looking at. I haven't seen that friend since.

@Richard James : I completely agree that it's a master piece. One of the few tunes I still remember how to play these days, because I enjoy it so much. But it was as well received back then as it would be today. Tales is my favorite Yes album, but most people much preferred their simpler songs like Roundabout back then, just as they would now. Nothing has changed in that respect. There are still great musicians putting out great music, but you have to search for them and they won't be found on pop radio ofc. Check out _Marcel the Drunkard's_ channel for some great jazz and fusion from the 70's to 2010's. Or if you ever liked metal as well as jazz, you may enjoy my favorite new band Stimpy Lockjaw. But be forewarned, Stimpy is not for everyone. My point is that there is so much to listen to now, and regardless of how much I miss the _"mystical"_ music of 70's rock bands like Yes, Rush, Led Zeppelin, and Gabriel era Genesis, I am constantly finding great new music. In any case, apologies for the 3 years late reply, just found this video a few minutes ago.

I remember the late afternoon of 9/11/2001 I was here in my home feeling a bit in shock like probably most people were that day. Sadness crept into my bones as well. Like the end of innocence. When I was much, much younger I use to lull myself to sleep with this piece by Steve. That sad evening on 9/11 I recalled the peace I had felt a teen thanks to Steve and Yes' The Ancient and I broke down in tears for the end of innocence in my life. There is only one Steve Howe and we all owe him thanks.

The master is so fluid. Dazzling fingers, each string deliberatly plucked for a clear and crisp sound, timed perfecly and full of passion. A song so intelligently written that the notes produce a sound that excites the soul; the body and mind become one! If it were only as easy as he makes it seem.

Fortunate enough to have witnessed Yes perform live back in early 1970's over several tours in US. Still own all original vinyl from 'Yes Album' to 'Going for the One'; which is personally considered bands best era of creativity. 'Topographic Oceans', released in 1973, is historically labeled as departure from bands norm; by both critics and fans. However, Oceans is anything but; if you listen to compositions carefully, each is composed from notes and phrases of early and future Yes works. Most prominent is this guitar solo from 'The Ancient', which includes strong elements from 'Close to the Edge' intro, and other major works. Oceans seems to represent spiritual past and future of Yes; through incorporation of elements from roots of other major compositions. The original Oceans album cover included script; in which philosophical methodology of album is described in detail. Topographic Ocean is metaphor for 'The Inner Eye'; that which sees beyond realms of reality, consciousness, and time. The music is reflection from roads traveled to reach this spiritual awakening. Interesting to note one of the bands most renowned and best compositions would follow; 'Awaken'.

I have had difficulty accepting Tales after the revelation that was "The Yes Album" "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" my three favorite records of all time. This quiet interlude on Side 3 of the original Tales of Topographic Oceans LP is my favorite classical guitar piece of all time. You can hear a pin drop as Steve Howe plays it. I always feel grounded every time I listen to this... and like the rest of this incredible album, its something you have to make a conscious effort to listen to because you will never hear it anywhere else. If you listen closely, you will find many brilliant and subtle musical passages that re-occur throughout this album in different forms. I have listened to the point where I have memorized every single note on all 4 sides and it never gets boring. Like the comment below wisely notes, this is a masterpiece. Its encouraging to know that other listeners understand and appreciate it as well.
