At the height of Steve James powers, he easily could have - indeed should have - won a couple of Majors. He had the talent. "I like the odd drink, and I like to have fun. If my coach have got his way I would have knuckled down and practiced a lot more. I guess I should have taken it more seriously." Steve James

He was alao the only player in the first round and quarter finals at the Masters between 1990 and 1992 to take more than 1 frame off Hendry. In their first round meeting at the Masters in 1990 it was 5-2. At the time James taking 2 frames off Hendry in a best of 9 match at the Masters was almost as good as beating anybody else there.

Hendrys nightmare..the crucible curse

Nobody else has broken the Crucible curse either. Losing very close to a hill-hill to a top 10era was hardly s terrible first time defence there. I recall Davis and Taylor failing to break the Crucible losing against qualifiers in the first round, and I don't recall such an ooh-haa surrounding their first round losses as first time defending champions there as there was Hendry losing to James 2 rounds further in than them. It was almost hill-hill in 1991.

@@hensmithers9687 A session to spare wasn't automatic clockwork even for him. It was an even greater alchievement for Hendry to win world championship titles in the second half of the 1990's than those he won in the first.. But every dog had his day as the saying goes, and James had his day, he showed a lot more threat in potting qnd breakbuilding in that quarter final than mamy he faced then and managed to sustain it for the whole 3 sessions vs Hendry and produced a spectaculwr burst of 4 framss at the end. It was the fag end of the season for Hendry he had too strong a first half of the season to realistically sustsin it for the wbole duration of the season and make a first time successfuldefence at the very end. Hendry for the time played an extreme amount of elite level competitive snooker in a sinle season compared to any other season that he or anybody else had ever played. But James deserves a lot of credit for beaing Hendry, but it and Hendry going out ahould not have overshadowed Parrott winning the whole thing. It's as though Hendry according to some eould have inflicted another 18-3 thrashing on Parrott if he had made the final instead of White who beat James in the semi final, but that's something that can't be proven. Also "Oh. But Hendry wasn't there" should never have been any of the reactions after Parrott became world champion as though not facing Hendry in the final and beating him diminished Parrott's achievement. Which was totally ridiculous. How Parrott started the final vs White and didn't lose his 7 frame early lead for the remainder of the match, who knows had Hendry made the final. Again the Crucible Curse is always in play for a first time defending champion.

Parrott winning the 1991 world championship title instead of Hendry wssn't exactly Parrott being no threat for the title but aomehow ended up being the champion Parrott and White being in 3 out of 4 finals in.1991 and 1992 of both the workd and uk championship instead of Hendry showed that Hendry did not get it entirely hia own way in the first half of the 1990's. Parrott and White proved to be a bit of a barrier for Hendry to overcome for a time.

Steve James had met other big names at the Crucible pre 1991 and at least made a match of it or won, so James showed that he was far more capable of winning far more than just 2 or 3 frames in best of 25 vs Hendry in that 1991 world quarter finals than what some people automatically assumed. Yes of course it was a bad rresult for Hendry, a nightmare for him but he didn't lose that many matches at the Crucible in the 1990's James deaerves a lot more credit for pulling off a big shock in inflicting a rare defeat on Hendry in the 1990's than he actually got. James was still ranked in the world's top 10 at the time so him being treated like some sort of no hoper was ridiculous. To achieve the clean sweep of winning absolutely every full session (not including only having to win 2 or 3 frames of a session to reach the required target of 10, 13, 16/17 or 18 finish the match off) of a single world championship and do it every single year is a very tall order and it waa evwn for Hendry. Even in.1993 McManus held Hendry to 4-4 in the first session of the world aemi final to stop Hendry winning the title by achieving the clean sweep of winning absolutely every full session he played in to prove that not even he in the peak of his powers was able to achieve the clean sweep. It has nsver been achieved.

Hendry never went an entire season unbeaten. But this wasn't a case of Hendry losing to James being only match he lost all aeason or the only time Hendry looked under any threat whatsoever all seaaon. The fact is that this result was more of a distinct possibility than many people thought at the time. In the run up Hallett went 8-2 up on Hendry in the Masters final despite many automatically assuming that Hendry would whitewash Hallett (the experts on the BBC did anyway) and Wilkinson in the British open final taking 9 frames off Hendry and it going to the deciding frame. Then Taylor beat Hendry in the Irish Masters final. People just thought that Hendry wss invincible that it was impossible that even he could fall victim to the Crucible curse. But as proven he did fall victim. Regardless of the sport even the "invincibles" don't win absolutely every single match they play. Even they do lose a match occasionally. Even Jahangir Khan lost a world chanpionship match in squaah after 555 successive wins, not that Hendry waa ever going to win 555 consecutive matches in professional snooker the way Khan did in squash. Hendry never even won 55 straight let alone 555. Proof that as even Hendry never went on auch spectacular runs as 100+ or 200+ consecutive wins between each "rare' defeat that true invinciblity in professional snooker was impossible to achieve, he only seemed invincible.

It waa the only time 5 world championship titles on the trot and 29 straight wins was ever going to be achieved at the Crucible. From 1997 on it's been totally unachievable for anybody with higher quality field.

Automatically assuming Hendry would romp James with a session to spare was rather ridiculous. In their meetings previously, James took more than 1 frame off Hendry so the chances were that James was going to come out of his world quarter final meeting with Hendry at least a respectable scoreline with his head held high at the very least even if he lost as everybody expected. It was always going to go to the third session.
@dvidclapperton

@@johnmc3862 it was much tougher by 1996 and post 1996. Hendry believe it or not improved,after 1996, (Hendry did win his 7th world championship in 1999 despite being seen to be poor for 3 full seasons, but he wss not as poor as was claimed it's just that he was no longer invincible (bar a solitary shock defeat by James in 1991) playing the same level as the early to mid 1990's even at an even better level 1996 to 1999 could not remain invincible), but by 1996 there were far more than just one big threat than there was at the time (I.e. 1990 to 1996) to Hendry I.e White and 1 or 2 others being a potential outside threat to Hendry at the Crucible I.e. Parrott the world champion in 1991 (he really cashed in big time on Hendry beaten by James) and Wattana in 1992 who scored more points than Hendry in 1992 round 2 but faile d to convert it into winning 13 frames before Hendry. From 1996 onwards there were about 6 to 8 players who were a significant threat to Hendry at the Crucible. Hendry dropping less than 10 frames for all of his first 3 matches at from 1989 onwards (bar James in 1991 and Wattana in 1992) wasn't going to last forever. There was no more of Hendry trying to chase a 10-0, 13-2 16-3 or 18-3 winning margins most rounds from 1996 onwards (as though doing his absolute beet to attain them was the only thing that would do for him for them to be acceptable performancez, but to thrash everybody by 1996 for trying to achieve such massive scores almost every round at the Crucible was him attaining the highest of standards was impossible.) was no longer achievable for him to be as ruthless in winning almoet all of the big titles year in year out in the most emphatic fashion like it was before. Hendry's 1999 world championship title success is proof that he was nowhere near as bad as was claimed ever since his 1996 world championship title. Hex did also win the 1996 UK champiinship final, made the 1997 world championship final, the 1997 UK Championship final, the 1998 Masters final where he only lost by a re-spotted black, and still won some other ranking titles 1996 to 1999 on top of his 1996 UK championship title and 1999 world championship title post his 1996 world championship title. Not as many as he was achieving before granted but against the field of the time it was still a good achievement.

Hendry took one visit snooker to the extremes. But he sometimes got unnecessarily irritated with himself whenever his opponents got a second visit to the table (and not just vs Jamea in 1991 world quarter final) (after they broke off and had next shot after Hendry broke off) evn though it was very rare at the time that players were instantly producing instant viaits. An opponent getting a aecond shot in the frame at the time wasn't exactly going to see him losing many frames from it. Apart from on a very rare occasion when Hendry didn't produce an instant clearance he was usually going to becl coming back to to the table in same frame wirh plenty still on the table. But thia was the one occaion at the time where Hendry's opponent, James here latched on to Hendry not producing inetant clearancea in frames. James believed he could beat him but he was good enough to cash in on Hendry not clearing the table immediately.
