BTW, Santana didn't cover this tune true to the original Peter Green arrangement/performance - Santana made it is his own. Why wouldn't Luke do the same?

I saw the original group at The New York State Pavilion on 8/8/69 . I think it cost somewhere between $ 3 to $ 6 bucks . Different 🌎 world . And the air was THICK .

A lot of folks don't know that Greg Rolie wrote and sang this and all the HUGE Santana songs of the late 60s and early 70s. Steve Lukather is unsurpassed on the guitar! I mean, no one, but no one is, or ever has been more all-around talented as he is!

Take into account his versatility and amazing feeling...and the fact that he’s such an all round great, humble chap...Luke has to be considered one of the most complete musicians of all time. He’s probably played on more Grammy award winning albums than anyone. Stunning as always. Notice how often the others give him credit after his solos...they’re all amazed too!

Yes, I wasn't aware Steve Lukather is the genius behind Michael Jackson Thriller album until I recently viewed Lukather, Paich and Joseph featured on an episode of Sunday Morning with Jane Pauly. We all knew Eddie did solo on Beat It but Lukather wrote and played opening guitar riffs on Beat It and Bad.

Lukather gave me chills with this, Rolie sounds like the studio recording even what? Forty years later?! Hey, I never particularly thought about this tune much. Gives me new appreciation for Carlos Santana. I play like him too. It's in there! Carlos was a shredder before there was shredding! Ringo certainly surprised a lot of people with his post-Beatles career. He's a treasure and apparently a decent man.

SL hits NOTES, cleanly, succinctly, with great tone that is bright but not shrill. HE HAS TONE AND POWER merged into something special. Also, the entire band is clean/tight.

No doubt about his talent or playing. The terrible/wonderful thing about getting good at anything is that the better you get the more you realize that you will never reach your goal. Just like any other musician Steve is well aware that he's only playing a l"esser" version of the music he actually has in his head. How is that for a curse? Still.. without it no one would get better at anything. Mind you: it is still VERY pleasurable playing music at any level, though :)

Rolie was one of the main reasons I took up organ some 50 years ago. Heard a Santana poolside tribute band in a Majorcan hotel breaking out from the usual trad latin smooth numbers to wake everyone up with Oye Como Va Black Magic Woman and an also rousing Hocus Pocus of Focus fame.I immediately bought Santana , Abraxas , Three and Caravanserai …
