How about the term corporate Rock? I've heard that term thrown out there before with regards to such bands as, Toto, Journey, REO Speedwagon etc. Don't worry Luke, Toto is NOT soft rock...Because you record a ballad they want to call you a soft rock band. 🤔 Now Yacht Rock is more like the corporate Rock terminology I was referring to... Think they're referring to the same type acts. Good interview John... looking forward to more! Gotta love Luke!💚🎸 I met him once and I asked to get my picture taken next to (then drummer) Simon Phillips... They wanted me to stand next to Luke....He looked at me 👀 kinda weird. I said us drummers need to stick together.🥁😎

Some of the coolest bands of the 80s are now doing the cruise shows... I don't think of it as an insult. That said, if kids today had better taste in music, perhaps these bands would be doing arenas again in the US.

At this stage, I don't think Yacht Rock should be considered derogatory. It sums up a bunch of good characteristics found in so many songs of the late 70's and early 80's.

Mellower soft rock songs by Toto like Africe and Georgy Porgy are labled as Yacht Rock. Other artists who fit that label more so in general include Ambrosia, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Seals & Croft, Pablo Cruise (pun?) and the like.

I always thought of Toto as preppy rock, they are certainly different then any group out there, I don't know where soft rock came from, when I think of soft rock Air Supply fits that and Toto is way different .

No - they have been completely erased from his brain. He now has no idea who Elton John is. He actively denies that it is even a name or that he can hear the sound of himself playing to Eltons music coming out of the speakers if you corner him and force him to listen to it. It's like someone removed that part of the hard drive. A hypnotist tried to bring him back to those memories but Luke would just recite cocktail recipes slowly and deliberately in the voice of Hal 2000 until the guy had a nervous breakdown. Let's face it: Elton is gone from Lukes past, present and future. It's beyond remedy. So those stories are forever lost to music history. True story.

Back in the 80s I thought of them as pop. Mind you I didn't care about such labels, I liked the music above all. I get why he doesn't like "soft rock" either, it sounds almost like an insult I guess lol.

The band are not officially breaking up, but they have decided not to tour again for the foreseeable future. There's no time limit on that, but it does look unlikely. New material? Again, unlikely because as Luke intimated in the interview there's no real money in selling songs anymore - it's all about the tours, so why record a new album if you're not going to tour it? I doubt we'll ever see this incaranation of the touring band again, because musicians like Shannon, Shem, Lenny and Warren have a living to make. Paich has said he no longer wants to travel. Tour fatigue and litigation from Jeff's ex-wife have taken their toll on the band, and I have to say it does look as if they're probably done, but there's been no official breakup announcement.
