Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Breaking Chords with Steve Morse Open-Voiced Arpeggio Secrets. I've had a number of requests to feature more of Steve's music, and aside from this lesson you'll find Chordplay, Three-For-All, and Soloing Secrets lessons hiding on my channel related to Steve, so do a search and you'll find them! Noticing the requests along with the recent Dixie Dregs tour that wrapped a few days ago, I figured it was finally time to feature more or Morse's magic - so let's dive in!
This lesson revolves around an arpeggio-based approach that Steve likes to use in his licks, riffs, and solos, and other players (such as Eric Johnson and John Petrucci) like to employ these ideas/sounds in their music too. So you can find plenty of examples on this idea being used out there, and this not only includes rock players - you can find examples of these arpeggios hiding in plenty of jazz, classical, metal, and various other styles of music.
Once a brief explanation of what we're doing in this lesson unfolds, then we're harmonizing an E Major scale along three different string groups on the guitar and applying the open-voiced arpeggios to expand this concept even further. I've also shared a "slip-n-slide" variation that I like to use as a warm-up or lick generator in this lesson. So there's plenty to get your feet wet and fingers blistered hiding in this lesson!
Needless to say, if you're a Steve Morse fan, a player searching for some insight into open-voiced arpeggios, are wanting to understand harmonized scales better, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you!
