My discovering of Journey went like this. Growing up pretty poor and it was just one of a very few times my parents had some spare change. At 11 years old in 1981 our family went to either Woolworths or Woolco (can't remember which one) but, my brother came up to our mom and asked if he could get this album (Joan Jett) she said yes. I asked if I could get one too, she said yes. I went over to the record section and started looking and found, what I thought was incredible album artwork. Not knowing anything about it, I had picked up Journey Escape and that was what I got..................turned out to be my favorite band!

I, personally, got a 2 armed hug (no one else did in photo proofs in 1994/5, I'm guessing it's a rare thing) AND he sent all the old memorabilia to my house (couldn't carry it all on the plane, even then, and it was glass). There was a LOT of it. Old glass album covers from Mouse (Stanley) and coke mirrors (like we used to get from carnivals). Programs, all kinds of stuff. I bought it all, lol. The Post office didn't break a single item, either.

My first impression, right at the start, was that this was just gonna be a bumbling interviewer asking tiring questions of Steve, but it was SO REFRESHING to hear it become something otherwise! Both of these guys, Jonesy and Perry, were genuinely, candidly, and jokingly open about even some of the touchiest subjects like "band resentment and degradation which contributes to a band's demise!" The joke about one of Perry's band members shaving a leg because he missed his wife was hilarious!!! Very insightful for those of us who loosely follow the music industry but are not directly involved with it on a level in which these guys experienced it on a regular basis! My hat's off to Steve Perry always!!! Bravo!!!! I grew up listening to Journey as a kid riding along in the backseat of my step dad and mom's car wherever they'd take us in our daily routines. Journey was one of the most memorable contributors to the musical soundtrack of my coming of age-- loved nearly every tune of theirs I heard. My full musical awareness of Journey started with Escape, even though I had heard earlier songs of theirs on the radio (I was born in '72). My stepfather used to blast the Escape album on his massive home stereo speakers-- sometimes the neighbors would call the cops for his late night slipping away into the music of his extensive vinyl collection. Journey was definitely among the regular vinyl LP's he'd pull out, along with Zeppelin, Molly Hatchet, ZZ Top, Boston, Pink Floyd, Rush, among many others (too many to mention here, some I wouldn't remember off the top of my head without being reminded by him or mom). The years that have gone by in my life since then have far removed me from his collection which I would love to have had the opportunity to pour over in the years since then (70s into the 80s). I parted ways with my stepfather in '84 when my mother died; I had quite a rough relationship with my stepfather as he was a drug and alcohol abuser, but the one thing, despite the many nightmares, I could take away from the seven years I knew him was some of the great music I got to hear both at home and riding along in his car with him and my mom wherever we went day to day! My sister, Veranea, and I often had long rides in the back seat of the car when we were kids because we would go everywhere with her dad and our mom always hearing what was becoming the Long Play records and memories of our youth; I'm not sure how much of it played into my sister's memories as she was seven years younger, but those years have left me with an indelible, although sometimes dusty, track of things remembered and deeply cherished as I slip away myself, bittersweetly reminiscing "why something good could hurt so bad!"

Best voice. Always loved the music. Steve is from the area where I'm from. He talks about it in this interview. Country raised boy from Lemore/Hanford California He got kicked out of Lemore High School then went to Hanford High School. Where went to school was a very small high school near Lemore, and Hanford in a town called Laton in California. Laton, back then was mostly Portuguese residents. Lemore has a government Air Base there so the town has many off base living there and in Hanford. Most people not know Perry is Portuguese. Not sure why he changed to Hanford High School instead of Laton High since they both were in same county ( Fresno) Hanford is in KINGS county ,Hanford is the County seat of Kings county. Perry is 3 years ahead of me so we would of gone to school together. He would of been a Junior and I a Freshman in school. To bad it would of been fun knowing him back then since the high school only had around 200 kids. my class has 52 kids in it. So everyone knew each other.
