Most underrated guitarist of all time. The work he has done with Radiohead and others shows that it doesn't always need to be about 80's hair-metal solos to make a top-ten list. Jonny deserves his place as one of the greats.

It makes sense to me, Johnny Greenwood rarely plays the guitar the normal way, as you "should"/ like it's a guitar. That's what makes his stuff interesting. However, I wouldn't personally call him an "underrated guitarist". Firstly, he's kind of famous. Secondly, Greenwood is known and cherished for picking up interesting pieces from other (less known) musicians and turning them into pop music. That's his thing and what he does best. Inventing new music he does not. (Not putting any negative values into this.)

This is Jonny Greenwood playing Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint for Electric Guitar. It was performed for the first time by Pat Metheny. About Mike Oldfield and Robert Fripp, both were influenced by Steve Reich in different periods. In fact, Mike Oldfield was influenced before. Mike Oldfield made a cover of North Star of Philip Glass in 1979's Platinum album. Around 1978-1979 Fripp watched Reich's performing with Eno and Belew as audience. Manuel Göttscjhing was influenced by Steve Reich around 1973-1974, you can check Inventions For Electric Guitar album. All those people, from Progressive rock, Ambient, New Wave, at the end were influenced by Minimalism. So, the idea was in the air.
