While these old karate tournament clips are nostalgic to watch, every time I see them, it becomes crystal clear why full-contact and MMA completely eclipsed them. "Tag, you're it" and "I have to adjust my gi" just can't compete with "knock-down-drag-out-submission-last-man-standing".

Exactly what I was thinking watching this. What does a " tag, your it " prove anyway ? It's not realistic at all. Barely any contact being made. It doesn't show who the better fighter is. It's just two guys doing hand motions in the air.

The point fighting of old had and has its place. Not everthing is about tatted-up, rubbed-eared, people in bikini briefs. A lot of these people have nowhere near the technique they would have if they had more formal training (like the old point karate guys) that you would be surprised how rough it used to get in those matches.A lot of MMA, BJJ het their asses handed to regularly in real, multiple opponent street fights...it happens all the time.

My old friend and teacher fought Mr. Sanders in the early ‘70s at Ed Parker’s Internationals in Long Beach in the team competition finals. My friend was VERY upset at the scoring. I believe that Mr Parker was Mr. Sanders’ teacher. Back then I believe that point tournaments were quite political in their scoring. Anytime the promoter of a large tournament allows his students to compete, the scoring is subject to suspicion when his students win. That’s is not to say anything bad about Mr. Sanders who was obviously very talented. When my friend would make light contact they wouldn’t count it and when he finally drilled Mr. Sanders in the chest, almost driving him out of the ring, they didn’t count that either because he hit him too hard.

This might be nostalgic to some .. but not me. This represents an era of really bad karate .. go back and look at the all Japan karate tournaments going on at this time … you see contact and way more skill. In many ways I think Americans at this time tried to circumvent hard work and experience. Getting frustrated not getting promoted to upper Dans (when clearly they lacked a total understanding of Karate application) you often saw them break away and form their own federation citing petty differences. The result was so often a form of kick boxing with rudimentary self defense practices (not really karate as far as budo is concerned. Point sparring imo is not really this… this is a demonstration is posturing as much as is what not to do… void by both is controlling the other person’s maai (distance and timing ) setting up the ipon etc. Point sparring does have benefits when done correctly. A few of UFC Machida’s victories were based on waza he perfected point sparing Same goes for Raphael Aghayev in any of his full contact matches
