I love watching Steven Adler play. There is a beauty to his physical style of playing ... like he's dancing with his arms, not just just playing the drums. I like it. Fucking good for you Mr. Adler. I am also in recovery and it's hard to get back to the things you did when you were high. You can do it man. You're an example to millions. Don't forget that!

+Mike Terry I don't mind Matt Sorum .. he's very precise and he basically could put drums to November Rain because of his Classical training. Anyway the band broke up in stages so maybe they'll make up in stages too. It's still early days. I think they're waiting to see what sort of reaction the reunion gets ... maybe they'll do just the original line up with Steven and Izzy as well in a couple of years. I would really like to see them all back together again. It would be so cool. Anyway ... there's still time. If they survived this long they'll probably make it to their nineties. Then I'll be in my eighties, but I will still like them : )

still has a great pocket. dude knows how to lay behind the beat just the right amount, like all the great rock feel drummers. Sorum is not in that category. There is no Nevermind without Grohl, no Houses of the Holy without Bonham and there is no Appetite without Adler. Great albums have great drumming and it's a feel thing, not a technique thing, that's why so many people connect with it. Drummers get dismissed but they are the key to everything.
@frettamohetta7326
6 жыл бұрын
Grohl and Bonham were born with complete feel, groove, dynamics, solid meter and know how to lay down a groove without being too busy, throwing out ridiculous chops every 4 bars and/or constantly noodling. These drummers aren't raising the bar when it comes to technique and fundamentals, are average in the grand scheme of things but they don't need to prove themselves. What they bring to the table with just groove, feel, meter and emotion alone is a talent that a drummer cannot learn. He/she is born with this gift and it comes completely natural to them - driving the music and bringing people to move their feet/bodies/to get lost in the music/song with the force of their playing and the incredible impact of their ability to groove naturally and organically. Their groove, feel and sound is completely signature and no other drummer sounds remotely like them. You can't teach a drummer how to groove, they're either born with feel or they're not. Most drummers who can't play with that kind of feel, if they're good enough, can mask it to a degree with technique, fundamentals and dynamics but it still isn't the same. These drummers like Bonham, Grohl etc are good rock drummers and average drummers overall (compared to the insane talent of drummers like Benny Greb, Damien Schmidtt, Chris Coleman, Gergo Borlai, Felix Lehrmann etc). But what drummers like Grohl, Bonham have is a perfect meter - solid beyond comprehension. That perfect meter translates into hair raising groove/feel - playing exactly what the songs needs, no more, no less. It's in their blood, it cannot be taught.

I agree. Listen to Nirvana before they had Dave. Kurt's song made that band, but Dave's drumming made it amazing. Sorum could play anything you wanted, reading it by sight, to a click track... but that doesn't mean it would have soul. Adler taught himself how to play, and he's no virtuoso, but he played a big part in making Appetite the timeless classic that it is. Some drummers are amazing at basically being drum machines, and there's even something to be said for that, but it doesn't necessarily make for great rock and roll.

That's because they know in their head how the music should sound. The rhythm, the feel, the flow, the techniques, the strengths, the intonations, etc., etc. It's the same with guitars. When people do covers i see a lot playing the songs note for note without feeling or flow. They are very exact and precise and play exactly the notes that are there. But the thing is, it's more important to play the feeling and the flow of a song. Because that's what the song is about. People recognise the rhythms and feeling of a song even if you play totally different notes. In the end, it's not about the notes, it's the feeling the music brings to people which makes a song great. This song just flows and is a musical masterpiece. No other song is alike. Well, at least not that i know of..

George Kamil You probably don’t know how many hours it took them to write this song not to mention Appetite. Most songs on Appetite were written under a day. Jungle in 3 hrs. It doesn’t matter how many hours you put into it, some people just don’t feel it. Steven has this natural flow. That makes him sound the way he does. People cannot reproduce that no matter how many hours you practice. That’s because for him it’s natural. It comes almost effortless. That’s why it isn’t always a good thing to copy an artist. Because 9 out of 10 times you can’t. It’s better to do it your own personal way in a way you’re comfortable with and just make the song your own. A cover shouldn’t be a one on one copy of the original. It should be ones own interpretation music wise. That’s the only way to prove you understand what the song is about and what it portraits or wants to reflect. Why do you think a lot of people don’t like Frank’s drumming? Because the song gets lost because of it. It doesn’t portraits the same feeling as the original. The nastiness and trash/punk rock style. It gets muffled away and ruins the song. Matt is a very technical drummer and by no means the same as Steven. They are night and day and could never substitute one and another. Comparing them is pointless and out of the scope of this dialog. To understand music you first need to feel it. Music without emotion is not music. Remember that!

A few things….Yes he's behind the beat slightly BUT that is the beauty of early GnR and it actually in many ways defined sleaze rock's sound. Secondly the cow bell was a very much maligned instrument in the 80's and Steven had the balls to bring it back and make it musical and finally look at the joy on this mans face, he loves these songs. Has somebody fallen asleep at the wheel at GnR? The reason every album after AFD was average was because Steven has little or nothing to do with it. Make no mistake the the combination of Slash's bluesy les paul tones, Izzy's scratchy rhythms and duffs punk style picked bass riffs that invented this music combined with Axl's intellect and 'fuck you' attitude it defined an era but it was Steven who was very much the glue that kept it together. You can hear it, not even Matt Sorum can cover his parts easily.
